3rd Generation AC problems ? Changing AC to r134 ?

Hello all, I have a few questions, for starters, last summer I found an r12 replacement and put it in my Camry and the AC worked fine. Last week I tried my AC again and it was cool/cold, but not ice cold like the previous years. So I went to buy 2 more cans of the r12 replacement, and the guy was like I mind as well get the kit and change it to r134. So I tried to do that. but everytime I try to put a can in, the freon goes out of the can but not into the system ??

I guess my most important question is, where is the low side to put freon in the Camry ? Is it the hose by the battery on the drivers front, or down by the front passengers strut ? Maybe I'm putting it in the wrong side ??

I might end up buying the r12 replacement stuff again.. Has anyone had success in changing over to 134 ?

I have not converted anything that is R12 to R134a but from what I have been told R134a will not cool nearly as good as R12 in an R12 system. There is also the potential for some type of reaction with the old oil in an R12 system when you convert (from what I have been told). I do know that if you convert you first have to have all of the old R12 (and R12 substitute) purged from your system by an authorized person before filling with the conversion stuff. And the low pressure side is the fitting that is connected to the larger diameter hose on most systems I have seen. I hope this helps and -

There's some R12 substitute: R416A or R413A.

Do not use the side near the battery. On my 94, which is an R134A system, that is the high pressure side. Trying to fill the sytem using that side with cans can be very dangerous. The can can actually blow up if it gets hot enough. You need to locate the low pressure or suction side. If your system still cools somewhat, run the system and follow along the pipe that "sweats" and look for the low pressure side fitting. You might also try going on line to Autozone.com and see if they have a free manual on line for your 93. My guess is they propbably do. Then go to the A/C section for the proper fitting location.

You might also consider putting in some dye and trying to locate the leak that is causing a loss of the refrigerant. Then you can fix it properly.

As a side note, what R12 substitute are you using? Where did you get it and what did it cost?

Thanks.

Mike

Did you install the R134 fitting adapters?

Yes, on two vehicles. First you need to buy a high pressure gauge so you won't over fill. R134 runs at higher pressures and you only need 80% of R12 volume. Seals and oil need to be compatable. The change over kits come with oil additive. Don't expect zero problems but it can be done. R134 leaks easier as well, so on older systems with any leaks, it will leak faster.

R134 - look for the bigger 134 fittings.

^ recharge ... if its a 95/96 then its R134, otherwise its R12

if recharge doesnt work, bring it to a shop to check ... could be a dead a/c compressor, among other various things

oh, and NEVER use R134a in R12 compressors or vice versa ... use what is meant to be used, or swap systems ...

If it's for the 92 Camry that's in your profile, your system is R12; unless someone has previously converted it to R134. If you are not the original owner, look for a sticker under the hood showing if it's been converted to R134. Putting the sticker there is usually SOP after an R134 converson.

I finally got time to look for a mechanic and he told me that r12 charge kits are no longer available and need to convert it into r134a(retrofit). He wants $120 including parts and labor..you think thats a good price?

Also, is this what i need to buy and how much? http://advanceauto.shoplocal.com/adv...nceAuto-070527
