Air Filter Housing Hose Question

I was cleaning the engine bay of my car and noticed that there was angular hose that ran from the air filter housing was hanging there. The only place that I could imagine it being attached to was an adjacent black canister. In fact there were two cannisters beside each other but the one on the outside had what looked like an attachment for the hose to be attached - so I attached it. Was I right? And more importantly what might have happened as a result of not having the hose attached. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Take Care,
