Manual transmission is leaking

I have a question about my 5 speed transmission on a 92 Camry V6 SE.
The car has 193,000 miles. The mechanic said that the transmission is leaking a little bit.
What makes the transmission leak? Does it have seals or gaskets inside of it that make it leak?

Is it better to replace the whole transmission or fix the leak instead?

Thanks for your advice guys.

The normal places for leaks are the seal where each axle goes into the differential (can be replaced with trans still in car), or the trans input shaft (need to pull the trans). Where is the fluid leaking from, axle or under the trans bell housing?

If the trans is operating OK changing a seal is less much less expensive then replacing the trans. Make sure whatever area is leaking does not run out of fluid.

A while ago I remember getting those seals replaced (where each axle goes into the differential). I think it was sometime in 2004. The leak is at the bottom of the transmission (just like the oil pan kind of) It is not leaking really bad but there is oil buildup.

I know my oil pan gasket and my valve cover seals are leaking.

Could it be engine oil making its way all the way down to the transmission?

Thanks!

The mechanic must have made the diagnosis based on something. Place some of the oil in your fingers and compare it to the engine oil. The trans uses gear oil that should smell different. If trans oil and it is only a slight leak keep an eye on the fluid level. The trans input seal is most likely bad. This requires pulling the trans.

could be your rear main seal or valve cover(s) as the oil would leak down. Check the inspection panel on your transmission to see if the oil is leaking from the rear main seal

check the seal where the half shaft goes through the tranny.. if not check if the leak is coming from your drain bolt.

if, your leaking between your motor and tranny ( where the tranny and motor mate ) there could be a problem. * not suppose to leaK *
