this thing is attached by a screw/bolt to the air filter housing ... the air intake hose goes from the air filter, to this thing, then to the engine ...
does anyone know if this part is a silencer? on usedpartslive.com [where the image is from], it says its an Air Cleaner Assembly, but i know on my subaru there is a part like this that serves to silence the air intake lines
do i really need this part? can i just cap off the air intake hose in the middle so that it only goes from the air filter to the engine?
if you need me to take some more pics of the pieces i took out or what im talking about, lemme know

I actually didn't realize what it was until I tried to take it apart. Yes it's a resonator/silencer. It is part of the intake assembly and companies wouldn't get that specific on parts.
so basically if i wanted to make my intake more like an SRI, i could cap that part off?
because right now its on the floor of my garage along with the rest of the intake pieces, so theres no need to put it on unless i have to ... but i have to find some way to cap that hole off in the intake hose
right now i have 4 coffee filters over it, lol ... im just putting them on to see if the sound of the intake is any different :-p

for those who dont know, this is how the pieces line up ... except theyre in the engine bay instead of on the floor
what i have done temporarily is this:
i might stop by home depot to see what i can put in its place that is flexible but wont let air pass thru ...
oh, and for those of you with the 5S-FE that have cut out the bottom half of the air filter box, how did you do it ...
i cant see a way to allow more air in from a cold location without losing the air filter too...

maybe put a cone filter in place of the silencer? although i think that might decrease performance, because then you have 2 inlets that are perpendicular ...
maybe one of the moderators or engineers of TN will post their thoughts?

The Gen5 and Gen6 are different, but mine had two intake silencers/resonators. All I did was use some black duct tape and cover up the holes. I've noticed that when accelerating, it sounds alot beefier then before. It's one of those great free mods.
if u want to can take it all off, the performance gains or loss are probalby no more the 1hp either way. the only things u need to be concerned about when modding ur intake are: 1. are all sensors and needed hoses attached. 2. is there a water bypas(if the intake is sitting low enough). 3. is this going to impeede on any other enigne functions.
i need to get some good tape or a plastic cover - im afraid it will rip those coffee filters and suck it into the engine, that would be bad
if you want to go with ghetto rig, you can probably put two layers of mosquito netting before the coffee filters. That way, even if the coffee filter rips, you still have the netting to prevent it from being sucked in.
I remember my '94 Camry, where the entire intake had maybe one hose, and 1-2 sensors. Now the '07 Camry has like 15 hoses going in and out of the intake system, and a few more sensors.
yeah, we only have 1 sensor ... makes it easy to install a SRI/CAI
i was thinking about removing the stock box, putting cone filter on the stock intake hose, and i could put the sensor in this extra opening i have now ... but we'll see what i come up with when i get a chance to goto some stores

You can cap it off & it will be louder, but you'll probably loose a horsepower or three in the process.
If you're going to go a short ram do it right. Attach the sensor to the throttlebody, and the filter to the sensor. The shorter, the cripser the throttle responce will be.
