A/C problems HELP

Hello

My a/c stopped working.

I still have the R/12 system. It has not been converted yet.

(1992 Camry V6 SE , 193,000 miles)

I had the garage test my a/c system and he said the condenser was leaking where the aluminum pipe coming from the drier meets the condenser.

The mechanic said that I need a new condenser, drier, and that pipe, plus converting the

new system to 134a...all that with parts and labor it's like over $800. I decided to get a new

condenser ($160), drier (25$) and that pipe from the toyota dealer ($133).

I looked in the Haynes manual and it does not seem to be that hard to replace.

What do you guys think? The system is empty, the mechanic discharged it.

Do you have any tips for me?

Your help is appreciated.

To do the job right the system would need to be tested using vacuum, this also pulls out any moisture. You will need some kind of gauge set to charge the system from Freon cans plus the R12 itself. R12 is sold only to licensed techs (you can get you own license on the web) and is more expensive then R134A. Check Ebay for prices.

Update

I am not planning on charging the system myself.

I just want to take out the old condenser, disconnect the line coming from the drier to the

condenser, and remove the drier. I would put in new parts after that. Then, I would go to the

garage and have a mechanic recharge the system with freon.

I regularly used a shop to diagnose my A/C problems and evacutate the system then do the initial recharge. I did all the wrench turning and parts replacement. Most of my reason was the cost of a vacuum pump. Pump prices seem to have come down so I may buy one and do my own leak testing using dye and my own evacuating as well. You should note that venting R134 to atmosphere is also illegal but impossible to enforce.
