OK, I have an 01, 4cyl, my check engine light keeps coming on, i went to autozone for a reading, and it turns out to be the egr valve, so i take the thing off, clean it up and reinstall it, and reset the computer the car ran good for a couple of days and now the light is back on, what gives. the car doesnt run poorly at all, everything seems normal except for the check engine light coming on.
any ideas? Trying to keep from dumping the money for a valve.
I dont remember the code it was a while ago when i went, i believe it was a P0401 or P0402. I am going back over there today to get another reading to make sure it isnt something else.
ok, it is definitly P0401. I am thinking it is the VSV, from what i have read from other peoples woes, does anyone know where this sucker is and does anyone have any pics. Also anyone know how much this thing may cost.
I have a P0446 and recently replaced my VSV for EVAP wich is located just to the right of the air filter box. It's an easy fix, part cost me around 50-55$ CDN, it did not fix my problem, but could very well fix yours.
It has two vacuum tubes, one tube goes to the top of the throttle body and another one goes down and all the way to the charcoal canister, at the rear of the car.
There are two more VSVs one the whole system, one behind the engine block and another one on the canister, but they are not easiy to get to.

and get the dtc's cleared? you can clear the codes w/out loosing your "memory" just need a code reader. also, removing the battery cable sets a code in some cars. anyway, removing the cable to clear the code/memory is fine, your computer tests itself every time you drive, and dosent need previous memory to run unless there is an important sensor problem.

it could be the vsv on the charcoal canister in which case you might just put a new canister in since it takes as much time but would give u a new evap canister and vsv

Don't know your engine but the large nut on the bottom of the EGR is a 15/16". You will need some PB Blaster to soak overnight and a 1/2" drive 15/16" crows foot.

ok i got in touch with my local stealership and the part (egr vsv)cost 70.55 and i was going to drive down there and get it after work, but the CEL went off and hasnt returned in the last couple of days. i am going to wait to buy it til the CEL is on and see if it is truly the vsv. Thanks guys for the help, i will post again if it comes back on and if the vsv fixes it.

I'd try one from a junkyard engine first, do they have pic-your-parts down there? I'll bet you could find one almost good as new for a couple bucks-(they use this engine on a lot of toyota models dont they, or only for camry? )
Sorry, didn't read the text in your car pics. I don't know how the 99 four attaches the EGR. You'll just have to look and see. Could be two bolt flange and not a single nut as is mine.
