3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok, from everything I've read, replacing the positive battery terminal clamp is supposed to be an easy process of taking the battery cable out of one clamp and inserting it into the other. Well, if your car is like that, then its not like mine.
On my 98 Camry V6, you can't take the battery cable out of the clamp. It is crimped onto it, and the only thing you can do is to cut the cable. If you do that, however, you are screwed, because you are not left with enough cable to reach the battery anymore.
Instead, the battery wire comes from the starter, is attached to a piece of metal which is forever crimped to the wire, and the actual clamp is then bolted onto this piece of metal. The bolt is the one with the arrow pointing to it in the picture below. What it LOOKS like is that I SHOULD be able to buy a new clamp just like the one I have, unscrew the bolt holding the old clamp, and then just bolt the new one on - no messing with wires or using any cheapo universal clamps.
Can anyone confirm that this is right, and do I have to get the new clamp from Toyota? Firestone gave me some crappy universal clamp that only goes on if you insert the battery cable right into it, which is utterly useless.
Someone help!
Thanks

This may be an aftermarket cable. You should be able to find just the terminal end but you will need to call around. Or just buy a complete aftermarket cable complete with terminal.
cut the cable, strip it
soldier a correctly sized extension
install new terminal.

Well, if this is after-market, then Toyota installed an after-market cable, cause I bought this thing brand new. And there has got to be a way of doing this without an extension. I mean, who's got time to solder all day?
That's OEM. I told you how to fix it if you cut the wire.

Thats EXACTLY what you do. Why would you cut the cable and do all that unnecessary stuff on a terminal that is like that.
