1994 DX A/C question

Hey all,

When I bought my car, the guy who sold it to me (sketchy 75 year old Croation guy) told me that the A/C condenser wasn't working. I never had a car with working A/C, so I didn't really care much but now the smoggy heat is getting to me.

Question: Is there a way I can check to see if it's indeed the condenser that's shot? Or is this a job better left to an expert mechanic?

Second question: If I do need a new condenser, do I have to get the system re-charged and all of that jazz?

it might be the compressor, not the condenser ... but take it to an a/c shop [not just some random mechanic] ... they should be able to figure it out in next to no time
