3rd Generation engine heat/temp. gauge

When I'm puttering around town or driving at 100-120 km/h my temp. gauge sits about half way. The other day (It was scorching hot) I was doing about 140 km/h and I noticed the gauge had moved up in between half and Hot. Is this normal?? Should the gauge always sit at halfway for hwy driving?

It always sits halfway for me. It may be time for a cooling system flush as the rad may be getting plugged up.

I had similar issue till replaced radiator. But it could be a few different sources of trouble:
1) Radiator cap ( actually two of them on V6- one sitting on radiator and another one on engine ). It is not holding coolant pressure - simply replace cap
2) thermostat if it stuck at half/open position
3) water pomp

If it is radiator or water pomp you could try to temporally fix this problem for chip by adding "water wetter" (Red-Line product) to coolant. /take it from Canadian Tire store and read instruction what on the bottle/

Mine was cooling down quite noticeably on the highway and when releasing the gas going downhill and such, replaced the Thermostat 3 weeks ago and so far so good.

do what other people say....and then also check your coolant level and your waterpump for leaks

temp gauge

Thanks guys...the rad in there now is used, I guess the previous owners replaced it.

As for the rad cap, there's Japanese writing on it so I'm assuming it's the original from 1994??

I will flush out the rad and change the thermostat/rad cap...Do you guys suggest buying one of those rad-flushing containers from Canadian Tire or just use water to flush it out?

Also, for the rad cap...is motomaster fine or should i get one from the dealer?

Karl

If you gona flash by yourself - use one of PRESTONE's flashing fluid and follow instruction or get all job Done by Tire - whatever.
I'm not sure about monomaster caps, I whould pay $5 more for caps from dillership (was $20 CND when I replced cap a year and half ago). It might worth it.

Doing it yourself is a big hassle. For this time round I would let Canuck Tire or whoever do it as they will use a chemical flush which I think you need at this point. Let them know of the over heat issue and they may take some extra time on the flush part.

"Stant" rad caps are fine or dealer, whatever, it's not a big expense either way. As for the rad cap causing this - I don't think so unless the coolant is leaking out the cap. If your coolant level is fine and the overflow is normal on hot and you don't get any boil over on shut down your cap is ok. But if it's an original, safe bet is replace it.

Also if you're doing your own t-stat change, no need to add anything but water on the refill if your going to get if flushed and refilled anyway.
