3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Recently, I haven't been able to "fill up" my Camry because the gas pump always shuts off about 1 gallon into filling.
It only allows me to put in about .5 gallons at a time before the nozzle clicks off.
It sounds to me like there is backpressure somewhere in my tank, or in the filler hose that goes to the tank.
I recently replaced my fuel filter, and in doing so I followed all the instructions in the manual (unplug fuel sender, run the line out, relieve pressure)....and this gas tank thing started after that
Anyone seen something like this ?
Looking at the diagrams in the book, I can't figure out what might be causing this
gas pumps do that when they're busted. go somewhere else?

Are you in the habbit of topping off the tank after the pump shuts off, to get the last few drops into the tank? If so, there is a good chance that you've damaged the charcoal cannister which is part of the vapor recovery system. Ak me how I know. If so, this is an expensive repair...over $300. Let's hope it's something else.
Topping off? Whats that? haha my car never sees anything above a half tank of gas. lol. Yes im cheap. =P

You aren't cheap, you have to be rich to always have the car filled up the way the prices are here. My car literally rides on E, at least it weighs less lol.
I don't know about saving money keeping it below I think you save more by keeping it above 1/2 but I don't drive enough to warrant me to keep it filled up all the time.
you cant save money by only filling it up to 1/2 ... unless youre messing with ur mind by seeing that ur tank is almost empty and opting out of driving somewhere
no matter what, you use a certain amount of gas per mileage ... thats pretty much a constant if your driving style is constant ... so whether you have a full tank or 1/4 of a tank, you should still be getting say 22mpg ... which means if you have 1 gallon, youre gonna have to add gas in 1 mile, etc.
