Car Will Not Move after Turn Off and On

My GF has a 1992 Camry XLE with about 250,000 miles. She got the car at 50,000 and the car's transmission has not needed replacing since. The transmission fluid was changed 2 or 3 times since she bought it. The engine has been replaced 2 times once due to lack of oil change and the second I believe because of a bad head job. The problem began in the winter when the car was about to get parked and was put into reverse but would not reverse. The car was pushed into the parking spot and we got the car towed back to her place. As soon as I started the car and switched the gear to drive it would move forward, but as soon as I turn it off and back on it would not move forward after shifting into drive. The car has been parked for a while after I jump the car and switch to drive it will move but once turned on and off again it will not move again. I am unsure of how to proceed. I would like to just get rid of the car but would like to sell it or donate it with the capability of moving without any issues. Yeah she probably was neglect with the car but we would just like to get you guys expert opinions.

It could be many different things as simple as a bad shift cable, bad shift solenoid, low or dirty trans fluid, or a failing trans or torque converter at worst. Is the O/D light blinking? Check the fluid level when cold first anyways to be sure. If you just want to get rid of it, then a trans fluid change followed by an anti-slip additive such as lucas or something similar may get it semi-driveable again. Otherwise, you need to have the trans pressure level tested.

im with venom...

You said "the transmissions not be be changed since 50k miles"...
Are you refering to the tranny itself or the fluid? If its the fluid, then your tranny is cactus pal. 200,000 miles on the same fluid will destroy any transmission.

Take it to a mechanic for a proper diagnosis and weigh up your options.

What doesn't make sense is that you have had the engine replaced twice... why? also, why wasn't the tranny checked or fluid changed when the engines were put in?

Hopefully you have been changing engine oil...

Ooooh Well

Thanks for all the help guys I will take a look at the car again this weekend. The car was very much neglected. I did not start helping her take care of this car until after the heads where replaced which was well over 170,000 miles. The second engine replacement the car went from 60 to 0 on the Meritt parkway. The mechanic said the enigne was seized tighter than a virgins pussy. It is great that we can laugh about it now but she did not even know to change the oil that was why her first engine blew.

She has already bought a replacement car just wanted to know if there was any hope for this car. I don't believe the Tranny is blown but hey who knows?
