3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Just wondering if you can tow a 92 camry without damaging the transmission? I know alot of new cars you cant. Anybody know for sure?
I've been thinking about ditching my 92 and upgrading to something new all week and ironicly the water pump gave out a couple days ago when I went to look at a newer car. I ended up having to tow it for ~50miles. I'm trying to decide if its worth fixing. Wondering if my tranny is toast now too?
I don’t think towing 50 miles would hurt the trans. The issue with some trans is lack of lubrication with engine off (trans oil pump off). You may be able to get around this by stopping every say 100 miles, starting the engine and runing the gear selector through P to L and back. This helps lube the trans.
The problem with towing a Camry automatic and most other automatics is that even though the tranny is in neutral some of the internal parts like the clutches and bearings still need lubrication. The front pump on the tranny which is driven by the engine provides this needed lubrication. That is why there are restrictions on the distance and the maximum speed.
if the front wheels are lifted, i think you can be in park for all that matters simply because the transmission is connected to just the front wheels (correct me if i'm wrong, someone).

^ i agree. ive had previous FWD cars towed, and they were always towed by have the front wheels off the ground. any truck ive had (4x2 or 4x4) the were picked up by the back wheels. AWD vehicles i heard arent good to tow and need to be put onto a flat bed.
