CEL fixed easily...

This morning I was on the expressway and 3/4ths of the way to my job, I see the CEL come up. I was pretty fucking pissed because I had seen it last week, and reset the battery and it went away...I even did emissions.

So, at lunch break, I drove it over to AutoZone where some nice tech plugged the OBD2 computer into the car and I was getting an EVAP code. She had said it had something to do probably with my gas cap leaking.

I doubted that, and she went and got a replacement and restarted the car.To my absolute suprise, my engine light went away. So yeah.... just another case of a person freaking out because of a CEL and fixing it with a 6 dollar fix.. I know that's the easiest fix I'll ever get away with.

Okay, so apparently...that's not all.

My CEL came back today on the expressway again...so I guess I'll get the code pulled again and see what the fix might be...

Any of you know what the cause of an EVAP code might be? Besides a gas cap..

That tech is an idiot. First off you cant just say its the gas cap just because its an evap code, theres dioagnostics involved. And no the cel did not just go away when he put the cap on, he cleared the code after he read it and put the gas cap on and fooled you big time. And an aftermarket gas cap is not good. ONLY stick with OEM gas caps or else your cel will come back on.

Theres a couple Vacuum Solenoid Valves (VSV) in the evaportive system that are a common failure point. As long as you dont have any vacuum leaks one of those vsv are more than likey the problem. By the way, even if you do fix the problem the check engine light will not turn off by itself right away. It will take a few drive cycles. Im betting they cleared the code after they checked it.

^ x2

if they are reading your codes, chances are theyre gonna clear them and then leave you thinking that they fixed it...

dont ever buy CEL solutions from AutoZone, only let them give you the actual code

just go back to autozone, get the code read again(write the code down if possible), return the cheapo gas cover and check up here with the code. Then you will be able to work towards the right direction.

FYI, it was a VSV that had a broken clip, so it wasn't connecting properly. My mechanic just got a new clip for it, and all was fine.
