3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was reading through some old post earlier about the Squires Remote mount turbo system that takes the place of muffler. Did anyone ever install one? A couple of guys talked about installing one and that was like 2 years ago, just curious if anyone ever did one.
Remote mount turbo setups work fine, lots of people will say they look like crap for whatever reason, or the turbo is doomed if you ever hit a bump but honestly plenty of cars have run them with no trouble.
There is plenty of room in the 3vz-fe engine bay for a turbo setup, but if it is easier for you to do a remote mount setup that will work just fine too. Keep in mind though you may not be able to get what you want out of the kit for what it costs because you will need to do a lot of other things to get decent power beside just bolting a turbo on.

The best remote mount turbos are ones that make mad power, have a quiet BOV and look completely stock on the outside. Booyah! You do that, and mad props!
I looked into one before, but they are expensive. They also don't come with any piping for intake or exhaust, or anything for fuel management, you can buy the same kits on ebay for a couple hundred bucks vs a couple grand for the STS unit. There is a guy on maxima.org that made his own remote mounted turbo for pretty cheap
I did my own version of one. They're fine, alittle more room to work with. You just need a really good, reliable oil pump.

wasn't much to know, turbo was too small for the engine so it died a quick bearing failure death. was fun as hell while it lasted when that wastegate was tacked shut tho. sure sounded mean.

no more than normal. think of it this way, a single bank V engine would normally have 6-9' of piping that's 60% of what it takes to get to the trunk.
Pipe sizing, and turibne choice are the two main things to any turbo's spool rate.
