differential gear stripped

Camry 95 automatic 4 cyl (415000km), the differential gear is stripped . Do I need to change the whole tranny or just the diff. gear?. I understand that the transmission and diffrential gear seat in complete separated compartments therefore, there is no chance that the diffrential gear debris could interfere with the transmission gear. Is this correct?. Any comment would help... Many thanks

not sure, but wouldn't you have to take apart the whole gearbox in order to access the diff? if that's the case, it might be easier, and cheaper, to replace the entire transmission.

i'm aware that it's in a separate housing within the transaxle. that doesn't mean you can remove the diff without removing the transaxle and that is what i was referring to:

1. you'll be hard pressed to find a junkyard that is willing to strip a transaxle apart just to sell you the differential part of it. they'll probably charge more for the diff itself because of the labour involved in supplying such part.

2. and this is related to 1. since the whole thing comes out in one go, you might as well replace the entire transmission: it will be quicker!
