Please Help! Changed distributor o-ring now cant pop it back in
I just changed the distributor o ring, bought it from dealer, it was the right size. put oil on o ring, now can't pop the distributor back in. Is it suppose to be this hard to pop it back in? It was kind hard to take it out i guess due to the o ring. Now it's even harder to put it back in. Took me two hours of trying, had my strong neighbor to try to push in for me, he couldnt do it. Is there a trick? Please help need to get my car running again before the week starts. Thanks anyone.
I've been thinking all night, i pushed so hard I was able to move the car.
I know something is not lined up, the little spinner was moved when I
replaced the o ring. so i think this is the problem. How do I line up the distributor shaft and cam shaft? i tried to look for marks and stuff but couldnt find any. ur urgent help is greatly needed and appreciated.
The end of the distributor shaft is slotted, you're either on timing or 180 degress off when you install it. If you didn't mark the rotor position prior to removal or don't remember where the rotor was when you took the distributor off then you can do two things. 1. Set the #1 piston to TDC compression and turn the dist. rotor so that it is near #1 firing postion on the distributor cap and push the distributor in while locating the fit for the slot. Or 2. find the slot postion so that the distributor installs. Center the distributor on the adjustment and tighten slightly. Attempt to start the car. If it won't start remove the distributor and turn the rotor 180 degrees. Either way you will have to set the electronic timing when the car is running.

95 camry 4 cylinders
*gulp* Hope mine goes easier... replace o-ring and coil
Im not sure how it is on the camry..but with my 92 accord...that slot that you see there in the post above inside the engine was offset to one side so that you just set the distributor offset side the same and slide it in. Its so that you could NOT install it 180 degrees the wrong way.
Is this not how it is done on the camry? If not...then thats one thing that honda thought of over toyota.

Yes, the cam key is offset on the all of the gen 3/3.5 engines with distributors. it will only go in one way. the quickest way I've found is to remove the dist cap and use the rotor to line the distributor up with the cam. when it matches, the distro will seat a little bit, then you can push gently and seat it all the way down. much less frustrating.

when i did my distrubutor O ring...I offset my distrubutor then I get in the HOLD so align to the mark you mark before took distrubutor off...it works for me...and run the car 5 mins and double checks for oil leak...
do not get O-ring from Autozon because you waste your $$..it will not fix your leak...it happen to me... get O-Ring from dealer because it only cost for 3 bucks...and the problem fixed...i never see the leak on my distrubutor again (96 Toyota Camry Le 4 Cylinder)...
the nearest toyota dealer is on the opposite end of GR (a long ways away) and I was wondering what size of o-ring to buy. I was thinking hardware store. Napa didn't have one, and Import Zone didn't have one either. Kid at ImportZone told me it's a paper like mounting gasket. Looking at the picture shown above, it IS an o-ring.
