Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This is my first post here in the forum. Anyway, I just bought a 99 Camry from my wifes grandmother (only has 20200 miles on it). I just picked it up last week and I need to install my Sirius Satilite reciver (Starmate R). I would like to put it right in front of the cup holders. I need to tie in the power cord to one of the cig lighters though. Does the consol come apart pretty easy? Is there anything I should know about it before I start taking pieces off? Any one have a better place that works for you in a different location than where I'm thinking? Any help is greatly apreciated.
Starmate R? The rectangular silver one with the blue backlit display? Nice! I seen the stands that come with it so I would do one of two things. Use the stand you get for home use and prop it up in that little area in front of the ash tray/change holder, behind the shifter. OR use that same stand and put some 3M brand super strong double sided tape and tape the sucker to your dash. As long as you have a visor the radio won't get any direct sunlight.
I don't really understand why you'd want to take the dash apart for the power supply. You do have a connector to go to the cigarette lighter right? Just use that and use a twist tie to bundle up the excess wires and then tape that somewhere out of the way.
The dash can be difficult to take apart and put back together if you've never done it before. Good luck.
Thanks for the advise. When Best Buy did the install on my F150, they tied it in to the cig lighter so that there are no wires showing. I'm kind of a neat freak and it the install looks cleaner that way. The Starmate Replay was available about a year and a half ago. I think you can still buy it online. It's the small squared one with the right side that curves. I've been really happy with it. I can't live without Howard Stern.
They make a lot of brackets for a lot of cars. I have one for my 1999 Camry and its amazing.
The starmate R is easy, it runs off of 12 volts so you can directly wire it to the cig lighter.
I bought the Stilleto and that runs off of 5 volts, much more tricky. I broke off the casing on the cig adaptor and hard wired the 12 volt end to the cig lighter, put all the crap in a medicine bottle to protect it, and the output was still 5 volts. I blew 5 fuses before I figured out it was 5 volts not 12 volts, haha.
Any questions man just PM me, I've done more sirius stuff in my car I can help you out anytime. I can send you pictures too. The dash is easy to take off if you are patient, careful, and take your time.

I got the unit in and hooked up. I must say it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. There were two bolts inside the storage compartment under the black pad that I removed. I then used a very small flat head screwdriver to pry up the frame that goes around the shifter. the frame, the flat area in front of the shifter and cig lighter is all one piece. After you get that off, there are two small screws that hold the console on also. Take those out and you can remove the whole center console. Funny thing is, is that I didn't even feed anything under the console. I fed the antenna wire through an access hole from the trunk that some other wires were going through on the driver side. I tucked the wire under the plastic paneling all the way up to under the dash. I then fed the wire to the shifter opening. It looks very nice with no wires showing. I still would like to get a mount from that website though. Thanks for your help man.
