Mechanic just replaced my timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump (new, not rebuilt), and 2 serpentine belts. Now my car squeals about 10 seconds during startup, then stops. It only occurs during startup, and usually only after it has been sitting for a while. If I start it, it squeals, then stops, then if I start the car again in a few minutes, it usually will not squeal.

Brought it back to the mechanic and he double-checked the top serpentine belt and tightened it just slightly because did not want to overtighten it, but said it looked fine...so what could it be? Do brand new belts need a breaking-in period? Is there an easy way to "hear" where it is coming from? Thanks!

Some oil may have gotten on one of the pulleys and then onto the belt.

He DID flush the coolant as well, his first guess was that maybe some of the antifreeze got on one of the belts....would something like that eventually go away with time? Should I put a few drops of brake oil on the pulleys? Or just drive it for a few weeks to see if it goes away?

is this like a slippage noise? or is it a grinding noise?

most mechanics have stethoscope-lookin things if you want someone to identify what part the noise is coming from ... it doesnt always work, but its worth a try

Do brand new belts need a breaking-in period? Sometimes. Aftermarket belts are especially prone to stretching after a couple of hundred miles. Did he use Toyota OEM belts or aftermarket belts? I would take it back to the mechanic and have him retighten all the external belts.

Take it back to the mechanic for retightening of the drive belts.
