3rd Generation Air Filter Help (yes...i'm an idiot :()

Hi all,

So I bought an air filter for my '94 v6 Camry and I can't figure out how to install it. I lifted the four latches but when I lift the cover, there is resistance and I can barely lift it enough to even see the air filter inside, which is incredibly dirty apparently. I can see a bundle of wires attached to the long black tube which is connected to the air filter cover that is causing the resistance. Are there other latches or screws that need to be removed for me to install this thing? I don't see any posts about this particular topic so I am assuming it is really easy and I have no idea what I am doing. So I apologize but thanks to anyone in advance who can offer some advice.

you have to unscrew the clamp around the intake hose and remove that to get the top cover off ... thats whats holding it down

also, a wire is clipped to the back of the air filter cover, so push that away before you lift it up

i can give you some pictures if you need them

Hey thanks a lot! It just started raining really hard out so I can't do it right now but if you have the pictures handy I would love to see them. I am still a little confused. I don't recall seeing a screw but kind of a metal latch that looks like it can be turned and pulled out from that tube. It didn't seem to really budge though so I was scared to do it too hard. Does that make any sense?

Do you unhook the wire at all? It seemed to be attached to a latch of some sort. I pushed it out of the way a little but it was strained as far as it could go and not letting me lift it up. Thanks again, any more help is much appreciated!

ok here ya go ....

remember, all the colors reflect the same thing throughout all the pictures

-- first, the blue circles indicate the clips - there are 4 of them where the bottom half of the air box meets the top half, im sure you know that ... they are in all four corners

-- then the 2 orange circles indicate 2 clamps that have phillips-head screws [i think size 2 or 3 if you have a tool set with #s] ... unscrew both of them if you want this to be super easy, otherwise you just have to unscrew the one closest to the airbox to barely pull the intake hose off the airbox

--next, the yellow circle indicates that clip i was talking about ... ill attach a closeup that shows the wire its holding, you just have to slide that wire forward out of the clip so it doesnt hold the box cover down

then u should be able to pull the box straight up once the intake hose & that wire are detached

if you have any more questions, just ask!

best of luck

is it like a drop in kn filter? I am not totally sure about gen 3's but it looks like the gen 4 where u can just unclip it and lift it up enough to replace the old filter without removing the entire top

u cant really ... u can barely get the filter out if u just unclip it, and it only takes a few more seconds to take that intake hose off

some ppl do without, but hey ... might as well learn sometime

Wow...thanks so much for all the help and instructions! I got it this time without too much hassle. I think what was holding it down was actually the bottom lip of the air filter itself. It was catching a little and making me think if I pulled it too hard I might damage something in the car. I was able to jiggle it a bit after loosening the screws. I truly appreciate the help, you are so great, thank you!
