3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
hey guys sorry i haven't posted in such a long time i've been going in between cars for the last while....gone from a 1996 4dr v6 camry-first car, gone but never forgotten, 1999 altima to a 1999 maxima which i must say the maxima performance community is nothing compared the you guys here on toyota nation they don't care what ur car is being used for....its their way or nothing and you get screamed at for having or suggesting sometihng different....so thanks again for the great forum.....anyway on to my question.....I have bought a 1996 v6 coupe with a auto(planning on swaping to stick) i would really like to keep the 6cyl because hp and tq are at a higher output when i start modifying than a 4cyl and there are not that many 6cyls that i have seen modifyied....i have the engine out and it is about to be sent to my engine builder to get port, polished and more or less built..... my goal is hopefully around 500whp and about the same in wtq. I was wondering what you think i should do: put a turbo setup on it(in which case what parts do you suggest because i know nothing about forced induction) or put a 100 or 150 shoot on it and see what happens that way....Thanks again for the awsome forum
if you want to get to 500whp your most definitely going to need a turbo. Talk to tony the tiger and check out his setup i believe his is like high 400's so your setup will need to be close to his.
ahh yes his most recent setup indeed had 520whp according to his sig but it's getting something new.
Anyway give him a pm as well as the many other turbo experts, and search through the old posts and the few people doing turbo projects now I am sure they have a ton of helpful info
You say you dont know much about F/I, so how do you plan on custom making a turbo setup? Or are you going to pay mad money and have someone else do it?
personally i wouldnt swap the 3sgte. the 1mz has such a nice torque curve, far better then 3sgte from what ive herd. i would most definatly pm tony. but as far as upgrading parts, ur gonna have to reenforce just about everything to squeeze out 500 hp safely and ill guess about 80% of thoes parts are gonna be custom made. so i hope u got alot of money behind ya. now me personally, i would never even consider trying to put 500 of the 460 that tony has through my camry. its just a waste in a fwd car. but as far as origionality and braggin rights its the ultimate.
i would also consider the S/C if ur new to FI. much easier to work with, install, and tune, but it wont have quite the hp potential of the turbo. in anycase. my best advice is to consult tonythetiger on the subject. hell be able to tell ya what 90% of us here cant.
just to clarify, tony has 520WHP on his camry right now ...
and the 3s-gte may not have quite the same TQ as a boosted 1MZ, but its a hell of a lot easier to just swap a turbod engine in than to build a turbo setup

The question is, what's more harder and complicated in the end swapping over a 3s-gte considering mounts are custom and stuff or swapping a 3vz or 1mz considering mounts is available anywhere you look and a custom rigging a turbo?
For starters stock vs stock the V6 is faster than the 3s-gte except for the latest one I think it's the 3rd gen one but that motor is way more than the 2nd gen 3s-gte!!!
Like Bigbird said V6 have a better torque curve and 3s-gte tend to have the power more up in the revs. Some have swapped the 3s-gte from their Mr2's to V6 for the better torque curves while still having the power and some took it even further by turboing that and still having a nice powerband.
I have some friends who work in custom shops who can make me the parts that I need at little or no cost to myself so that is how im hoping to afford this.....I have quite a bit of mechanical knowledge as well as my friends who work in the shops know their way around cars(american muscle...but cars none the less)...so ya i have pm'd tony and am just waiting for a reply so thanks again for all the information
