3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Seriously, how strong is the back bumper of the 1996 Camry? *My story*
Okay, today I had the 3rd back bumper accident in my 1996 Camry, and GODDAMN! not a single noticeable dent. I mean it. What is the material that the old Camrys are made off. I know that the material that use to be use 10 years ago is alot more firm and durable than the crap they use now. The main reason I don't want to get rid of my baby is cause the back bumper never fails to impress me. 2 days ago some idiot bumped into me from the back, and when i got out, there was like a 1cm paint job scratch on my car and his lights were broken and more than 15 inches of his paint job was ruined. When I looked at my car, i tried to figure out were the hell did he bump into me, and all I could see is a tiny black spot where the paint has come off, but now dent what so ever.
Now today i was parralel parked waiting for a friend, and a Maxima backs up right at my back bumper. I swear I heard it and started laughing. What are the fuckin chances, 2 accidents on my back bumper in 2 days. I got out of the car still laughing, and the other guy got out his phone to call the police and when he saw if there was any damage, there was NO damage to my car. It took me a couple of seconds to realise where he hit me. his car one slightly bent and there were 1mm 2 tiny dots on mine. He insisted on calling the police cause an accident is an accident. I told him to go his way and not worry about it cause if the police did end up coming they'de fine us for wasting there time and would probably throw us in jail for wasting there time, haha. Anyway, God bless my camry and all camry. Just thought I'de share my story with all you camry owners and also 1996 camry owners in specific, cause you have one hell of a back bumper, and you ain't gotta worry about anything!

Thats awesome man! I drive a 96 Camry 2.2 as well and it's good to know that I am safe in a rear ender. I had a 89 chevy corsica that was the same way (two rearenders in two months) and the front of two very unlucky cars were destroyed and i had two little black marks from the rubber strips on their bumpers.
I got 2.2 as well man. And trust me, god forbid of u getting rear ended. But when you do, you'll take the love to ur camry to another level. Im inlove with mine. There is a relationship going on

xet, i was super pissed of the first time. But the second time, i didn't wanna get upset again, especially after I saw that there were no dents. Then again, white out can do the job:P.

so, ive come to the sickening conclusion that, under no circumstances should you do this, but the gen 3 camrys are the perfect contender for a demolition derby
Ditto, I got backed into (front bumper but still) by a ford truck with a steel rear bumper. His wasn't damaged of course, but I was expecting a smashed bumper, all there was was a line and one little mark. The line has almost vanished from the plastic returning to it's shape... *sings*"God bless our Caaaammmrys, cars of the leeeet!" ROFL

should TN every arrange one of those, I am SO DOWN. could you see that?! that would be great!
