3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
What you're looking at is the head I purchased a while ago (Marco's old head, from mr2oc), which was ported and milled to 10-1CR.
I had the following done to it:
-Custom Crower 55/165lb valve springs
-New valve stem seals
-33.5 mm intake valves
-Adjusted throat size
-Multi Angle Valve Job
-Shimless buckets
-Milled head to 10-1CR
-Ported and Polished
-ARP modfied 3sgte head studs
-3S-FE rav4 cams reground to .370/.390 lift and 220/228 duration
ChrisK @ EngineLogics.com did all of the valvetrain work, with the exception of the cams, which was done by Ken @ OregonCamshaft.com
The install is set for next week, I'll be pairing it with a rebuilt shortblock with the balance shafts removed and journals plugged, a '97-99 camry oil pump (gen4), Comectic MLS head gasket and complete Toga gasket set.
i wanna see the 5S-FE dyno'd after this kinda work ... i thought about gettin some better cams for mine and then doin the valve work to match, but idk if you get significant HP gains or not

trust me, it cant be as much as what I spent on the block alone. So tell us.
I think the valvetrain work at the moment, including what I bought the head off Marco for and paid for the cams/grinding, is in the neighborhood of $2k (probably a bit over)
If you're asking for a total of work done on the car, I'm not really sure, nor do I really want to do the math on that without a psychatrist near by.

lol, I just found the things that I've done to my car that are staying on it. Nothing like put a cold air intake on it, then switching it out to turbo or something
i'm impressed with the quality of the build & the use of the RAV4 cams.
one question out of curiosity - would the 3SGE Cams from a ST16x 4th gen Celica (not the turbo GTE) not fit the 5SFE?
Good luck getting it all put back together again & cranked up.
just be sure to check & double check belts & all that good stuff to avoid any catastrophes.

The 3sge cams are true DOH cams, they have 2 external pulleys, where-by the 5S-FE uses 1 external pulley and 2 internal gears (the exhaust cam runs off of the intake cam gear), so that wouldn't be possible. The 3S-FE uses the same style of internal gears and 1 external pulley like the 5S, so it's possible, I'm just glad they actually fit in the 5S head and match up, aside from the larger base circle (at least on the later 3S-FE's).

Since you're removing the balance shafts, do you do anything special to prevent harmonics or other vibration .... is this a concern? Are you having the engine dynamically balanced?

All engines are balanced internally. I wouldn't suggest buying one if it hasn't been balanced.
I just picked up a goodyear gatorback timing belt (lifetime warranty), and low-temp thermostat (170), now I'm just waiting for the gasket set to come in (hopefully monday).
I'm not looking forward to reports I've heard of the gatorback belts squealing for a while before they wear in but with the quality they are and the warranty, I'll take it. haha
I'm also going to be picking up some supra green-top injectors (315cc) which should meet the fuel demand on the engine and an adjustable FPR. I'll probably just buy junkyard injectors and send them to http://www.witchhunter.com for service. I'll still need to figure out which FPR I'm going to use... I'm thinking of going with a Paxton at the moment.
