Spark plug swap gone BAD - tube removal?

Hi...

I have a 1996 Camry 4cyl and I'm trying to change the spark plugs. I gently removed the plug wires but on two wires the rubber grommet came off the end and it's stuck inside the tube preventing me from removing the plugs.

I removed the valve cover and can't seem to unscrew the tubes. I found a "special" tool on the web that is used to remove the tubes. There is any other way to remove the tubes or remove the rubber pieces stuck inside???

Please help.

Thank you!
Robert

This happened to me. It was a pain in the ass, but I was able to get the rubber tubes out. I used a long sharp object to reach into the spark plug tubes and cut up the rubber tubes. I then used a coat hanger to manipulate the large pieces out. Then I used a straw and either a vacume cleaner or my mouth to create suction on the straw to remove the smaller peices (I used a vacume, but your mouth works just fine, but be carefull not to inhale any pieces).

The same thing happened to me a while back, it was while I was using Bosch plug wires. Ironically, they came with a lifetime warranty and I got a free pair of wires out of it, which the same thing happened again, so I became pretty acclimated to a method for removing the rubber pieces. Using an x-acto knife, you can easily cut the rubber up, and cut yourself a piece of coat hanger, with a bend in the end (to grab) and try and mush the rubber pieces to the side of it, being careful not to scratch the cylinder, but just bring it up that way. It can be a pain in the ass, but it works pretty well.

When cutting, cut toward the spark plug, not toward the outside.

Make sure to get NGK or Denso plug wires when you replace it, I tried using Bosch and it's ironic how poor their products work on Toyota's.

That could work, but the problem is finding something with an opening mechanism that you can actually open far enough and manuever to grab something. I tried forceps with my old one, and you couldn't both open them and get them to the edge without having to pull them too far out to be able to grab.

By all means though, if it works, go for it.

^^^^

When I've had 5SFE plug boots come off int he past, I just used a pair of really long needle nose pliers and a really freaking long flat-head screwdriver.. Took awhile, but got it all out.

Smear some di-electric grease on the inside of the plug boot and you won't have to worry about trying to get some tool to remove the boot stuck to the plug.

I wish it were that easy, if you use Bosch plug wires, they seem to always get stuck with at least one of the rubber seals. Typically, I use di-electric grease around the insulator of the spark plug and inside the boot and around it.

Long story short, as far as I've had experience with:

Bosch plug wires = 2 sets that I had to pull seals out of the spark plug chamber
NGK = 1 set and no problems

I ran into the same problem a few times. After borrowing some very long needle nose pliers from Autozone, I went to Sears and bought some for about $12.00. That's the easiest way I've removed them.

I myself have a plug-hole to re-thread (heli-coil didn't work already, I'm going with a time-cert bushing).

I still need advice on a tool to remove the spark plug tube. I'm pulling the head right now, but it isn't going great. Anyone know how to get to the passenger side lower intake-manifold bolts ???

I haven't had this problem before, but in similar situations I've used a pair of scissors to try and hold something while I pulled it out....
