3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My cousin 93 wagon died on him a couple of days ago, i went to go see the car and thought i could help but no success. The car is receiving power inside the car, but when you try turning it on it seems as if it isnt getting any spark to the engine. We tired giving it gas while turning it on but nothing happned. All fuses are working i believe it may be the starter but im not sure. If you guys need more info i'll let you know, i'll also take a video of how it sounds

It's very possible to have enough battery to operate the interior but not enough to crank the engine. Have you tried a different battery or jumping it?
yea it does keep cranking and nothing happens, i was thinking of giving it a jumpstart but it sounds like the battery is good, because is does crank but no go. It just keeps cranking over and over, but nothing really happens...he had told that while looking for parking the started to loose power until it eventually turned off. When we first turned it on[today], it seemed to start but instantly died...Tomorrow if its possible i'll post up a video of how it sounds.

We don't need to know how it sounds, just that it cranks but does not start. You need to determine if the plugs are getting spark. Pull a plug and ground out the threaded portion on the engine. Have someone turn the engine over for a couple of cranks and see if you are getting a good blue spark.

Hi! Maybe I can help...If the starter turns over/ cranks but engine does not start, it might be due to a faulty starter coil. I had this problem before and replaced this $15 part and it worked!
I agree with Stillrunning -- check for spark first. Either pull a plug and check it like he said, or pull one of the wires and stick a screwdriver up into the connector of the wire, hold onto the metal handle of the screwdriver, and rest the base of your hand on the aluminum valve cover, and have someone crank the engine. If it makes you cuss, then you've got a spark, and you can go on to check for fuel.
Sounds to me that if it lost power and died, it lost fuel pressure. What engine is in the Camry? If the cranking sound weird, like there is no compression, the timing belt may have snapped. But yeah check spark and check fuel. (And fuses)
92ES5sp has a point. The Timing Belt may be broken. You could also pull the distributor cap and see if the rotor turns. No turning, probably TB. If rotor turns then check spark. Don't go by the shock you may get, you'll want to see a good strong blue one.

Reading back through the symptoms, I'm thinking possibly the fuel pump is bad, or the fuel filter is stopped up. Or, uhh.. it ran out of gas?
Or it could be the timing belt, as others mentioned above. I would still check for spark first. You have to approach this by a process of elimination. If you get a spark, the timing belt isn't broken completely, but it could still have slipped.
thanks for the suggestions, it does have gas, about 1/4 of tank, im going to try to see if i can get a spark if that doesn't happen, i'll try a jumpstart then i'll go into detail after what happened...thanks for the help...everyone...hopefully this isn't major problem for him
