97 Camry XLE strange noise

I am hearing noise from rear passenger side, took it to the shop and they change the Bushings but the noise is still there. the mechanic suggested that it is from the backing plate but no need to worry about it. Any comments please.

thats a little vague friend.

what kind of noise? squeek, thump, rattle?
how loud?
is it near the suspension or the rear passenger side of the car(exhaust)?
when does it do it, accelerating, breaking, going over bumps?

theres plenty that can and does make strange sounds back there, all the info u can give will help us.

welcome to TN

Hi,

It is actually rattling (cowbell) type noise, metal hitting metal. It is coming from the passenger side whenever the right rear when go over a bump or go over little uneven surface.

Which bushings in the rear did the shop change? If they changed the rear sway bar bushings and the nosie is still there, then the noise is most likely from the upper strut mount on that side. I had this same problem on my 98 Camry. If the car has 80,000 miles or more on it (you don't say), I recommend changing both rear strut assemblies with the Monroe Quick Struts. This way, everything in the strut assembly thta can cause the problem will be new and there is less labor to having your mechanic install them. The Quick Struts should cost around $400 for both sides for the parts. Discuss this idea with your mechanic and see what he thinks about the idea and what he would charge for the labor.

or, if youre going to go ahead and spend $400, get some real struts ....

KYBs for OEM feel, Tokico's for a more agressive suspension

It was the sway bar bushing that they changed, the mechanic thinks that the struts are not causing the noise but its the backing plate. The plate costs 100.00 but it will be 3-4 hours of labour, I am not sure if this will take care of the problem, and trying to find out if anyone has same experience.

If it is more of a clanking sound, I would suspect the muffler is loose and banging up against something, especially if it only happens going over bumps. Maybe the mounting strap is broken/rusted thru. Maybe go to the back of the car and grab the tailpipe when cold and give it a good shake sideways and up and down to see if you can reproduce the sound.
