Gas spewing from MAP Sensor??? (00' 4Cyl)

Ok, for posterity's sake, I'll leave the original post below... what was actually happening was some other high pressure leak blasting against the MAP sensor.

I'm still stuck changing that hose, I suppose.. Now I'm trying to figure out how to change that one.

=========== ORIGINAL (INCORRECT POST) BELOW ===================

I'll come back later with a picture, but I have a pretty major gas leak, by all appearances spewing from the MAP Sensor on the firewall, when the engine is running. The Gas Leak is a steady spray (about like squirting out glass cleaner on a spray setting), and like I said, it *looks* like it's coming from the MAP sensor.

Keep in mind, with that kind of gas leak you don't leave the engine running for long... Circumstances are I guess it drove about 50 miles like that at least... (nothing like driving along watching the needle actually move)

So... my questions are..

- Is it the MAP sensor? I thought that was Air going to the MAP Sensor..

- If it is the Map Sensor... It looks simple enough (but an expensive part) to change... am I wrong?

- What else might it be?

Thanks in Advance... (I love my Camry... although I'm a bit disappointed in it.. this makes THREE things that have gone wrong on it in 120K miles and 7 years!

hmmm thats interesting, yeah your really going to have to put up some pics

Because the map sensor just measures the pressure in the intake manifold and then sends the signal back to the ecu for it to calculate how much fuel should be added into the mix. so no I don't think its the map sensor.

hmm are you sure it isn't part of the fuel rail.

Good luck!!!

Yes, it was the line from the Filter to the Rail

The guy in the Parts department said he'd worked at Toyota 15 years and this was his first time seeing one go.... Lucky me, I suppose...

Thanks for the reply!

The MAP sensor does not have any fuel going to it, do you mean the fuel pressure regulator?

yeah looks like a black plastic hose, but then becomes transparent tight before it goes to the fuel rail, you might be better off going to the junk yard and pulling one off, did you give you a price on that part?

you may have a ruptured fuel pressure regulator diaphram that is letting gas into the vaccuum lines. Replace it.

Thanks... here's how it worked out in the end..

Thanks to all for your replies...

In the end, here's what happened...

- I had the dealer do the work. I have a mechanic I know and trust very well, but on this particular date, I went with the dealer.

- It was the fuel line from the Fuel Filter to the Injector Rail... cost new, $234.95. (Not just the hose, but the hose with the flange assembly on both ends). The leak was actually where the rubber met the flange assembly on the injector rail side.

So, the car is back in operation, and me minus a few dollars.

While it was in, they upsold me on a few things - Timing belt was about due... so that along with the engine seals, they did. Water pump, they said was on it's way out too. I thought to myself, "Water Pump, big deal" and had them replace it. In the end, they charged more overall to change the water pump than to change the timing belt... That was a little odd, I thought.. Next time, I'll be sure to do that via my private mechanic and an aftermarket/less expensive water pump from an auto parts store.

Thanks again... My plan is to keep my little old Camry for another 100K miles or so... thanks to all who replied.

"Water pump, they said was on it's way out too."

Unless it was leaking coolant out the weep hole, there is no way they can tell it's on it's way out. It's like trying to predict when a light bulb will burn out. That said, it's probably not a bad idea to replace it while they were replacing the timing belt; if they gave you a big break on the labor for the waterpump.
