engine opinions

Well as soon as i get Allens coilovers my suspension will be fully built, i am happy with the exterior, the braking is adequate for now and the interior is being worked on. Now the engine is the flaw. My question is the cheapest route to 250 hp preferably without spray. The options are turbo the 5s, swap in a 3sgte or a 1mz. With the suspension like it is i want to hit the track with a nice wide powerband too. So what should i do. Remember cheap is one of the key words. Not cheap as in no money but i want the cheapest for the goals.

Cool

A race track as in not a drag strip?

Needs a swap or a fully rebuild 5s. v6 swap is cheaper & faster.

that v6 swap wont get u the 250hp though, but it will give u a great powerband. i vote V6. however none of it will make much differance if u cant control the tranny, so a manual would be a must if u wanna track the car well.

DONT BUILD THE 5S-FE!!! its a bitch and a half & only build it for a turbo ... you cant do one without the other and get significant HP gains

if you want the easiest route, go with a 1MZ-FE ... you can even go 1MZ-FTE if 360glitch shows us that its a good setup

if you want something a little more original, go with the 3s-gte swap ... i know people dont like its powerband as much, but its already turbo'd and like it better

its really a matter of choice, but i think the general consensus is:

1) 1MZ-FE [or FTE]
2) 3S-GTE
3) 5S-FTE

I have a manual in it now and will stick with one. ANd yes it will be a track car not a drag car. I would rather outperform other cars on real life roads not on the straight lines. But i figure 250 would not make it a shabby drag car in the least either

3MZ 5 speed, 225 hp with 240 ft·lbf of torque. Add an intake, some headers, exhaust, camcon... Yeah.

Or be the first to do a 2gr.....

Built tranny isn't really needed since he has a manual already it should hold up plenty fine... You can always just swap a newer one.

I would concentrate on building the motor. But yea hang back and see how 360 does with the turbo.

oh yeah, u do, i forgot.

well ud prolly wanna swap in the e153 anyways if u went with the 1mz, im pretty sure most have said the 4cyl manual(cant remember the code) wont handle the torque of the V6.

milt did u get that 3mz done? where have i been

I also don't understand what the issue is with building a 5S-FE.

Throughout all the dyno's of any built 5S-FE's, they've had huge powerbands.
One of the great things about an NA build also is that most of the stuff you actually replace for making power is stuff that would've potentially bit you in the ass in terms of reliability.

New pistons, cams, valvetrain work, etc.

It's highly improbable to make 250whp with a NA 5S-FE, but many of the numbers seen from current 5S-FE builds typically equate out to around 180-200hp at the flywheel, which is pretty good.

For a 250whp goal, I'd suggest getting a rebuilt longblock, maybe a thicker headgasket to reduce compression, a '97-'99 oil pump (higher flow) and from there working up a turbo setup to meet your goals.

Making that much power reliably comes with a general price tag, you can't really ignore that. There's tons of people who take an engine with 100k+ miles on it and try and slap a turbo on it, but the result is typically less than ideal in the long-run.

but like i said i said cheapest to get to 250hp, not a cheap build in of itself. I will still be building it quality.
