93 5sfe loud taping

Hey guys
I have a 93 camry with the 5sfe engine and 5 speed manual tranny, the engine was recently rebuilt by a local engine shop, the new parts that they used I belive are craptastic garbage.

So I was driving home from work today and was coming up on a red light, so I downshifed into second, doing about 15-20 MPH.

I heard a odd sound fron the engine and from there it began taping very loudly whenever I accelorated the tinyest bit, I am very mechanicaly inclind and at first thought somthing was up with one of the cams but everything apears to be ok in the head, so im thinking it may be a thrown bearing which would suck cause the engine was rebuilt not 3000 miles ago.

Is there a way to tell if it throungh a rod bearing by looking at them?

I have the oil pan and balencer off already but I cant tell if there is something wronge with them.

There where some small chuncks of metal in the bottom of the oil pan

Will I have to remove the crank to figure out if I have a bad bearing?

small chunks? like shiny silver foil? like lots of bronze colored flakes? signs of dead bearings...
by the way, rods get thrown, usually through the block or oil pan. bearings spin, cutting off their oil supply and roasting the crank surface. You need to remove the rod cap and main caps to figure this out, and you need a good torque wrench to put it back together. the crankshaft stays put. copper is bad to see, and so is a scratch on the crank surface that you can feel.

however, there should be no chunks, and your noise sounds suspiciously like rod knock. take this evidence back to the engine shop, they should investigate it and cover their work if necessary.

I'd believe valve tap if the camry used a different method of valve adjustment. this isn't a smallblock chevy, and to have valve tap suddenly spring up would mean a new head in the near future.

Hey guys thanks for the replys,
The shop is actualy a machine shop basical you pull the motor out of your ride and take it to them to have it rebuilt. The chunks of metal where small but im not sure what color.
The head seems to be fine, there are no scratches on the cams and no metal particls/ peices that I can see in the head.
Its very obvious that the shop used a realy crapy engine kit like the ones on ebay......
The bolts they used look like they came from an hardware store wich sucks cuase my dad paid 1100 $ to have them rebuild the motor.
Would it be possible if the crank is not destroyed to just buy new toyota bearings and change them out?

Was this a loud taping noise or a knock, as in hitting something with a hammer? A rod knock noise would be buried in the engine, a valve problem near the valve cover. If the noise was occurring under acceleration, sounds like a rod bearing.

You can pull the bearing caps, look at the bearings and see which one is bad. The crank may be damaged from all the pounding (that noise you heard).

If the crank is damaged make sure the shop repairs or replaces the crank and does not just replace the bearing with another. Otherwise the noise may go away for a short time, but come back later.

If the crank journals were ground when rebuilding the engine, one journal might have a taper.

In the future if hearing such a noise, with engine running remove a spark plug wire and listen. If a rod knock, the noise will often decrease or go away if the plug wire to that cylinder is removed.

well i pulled the rod caps and all of the bearings have small scraches, (no damage to crank) and pits in them
Also the out side of all the bearings are realy shiny and the centes are dull looking why is this?

is it possible that something in the oil pump broke and threw metal everywhere?
this is driving me crazy, if I could just frigure what is wrong with it........
