How to remove the valve cover.

Removing valve cover, by: auto zone

2S-ELC, 3S-FE and 5S-FE Engines
See Figures 3, 4 and 5
It is recommended when replacing the valve cover gasket you replace the seal nuts also. They may be reused only if they do not seem to be damaged.

1. Remove and label all electrical wiring, connectors and vacuum hoses necessary to gain removal clearance.
2. Remove the spark plug wires. Disconnect the PCV hose.
3. Remove the four nuts and grommets located on top of the cylinder head cover.

On 3S-FE engines, label or arrange the grommets so that they may be reinstalled in the same order. This will minimize the possibility of oil leakage when the cylinder head cover is reinstalled.

1. Remove the cylinder head cover and the cover gasket from the cylinder head. Discard the gasket and replace with a new one.

To install:

1. With a wire brush or gasket scraper, remove all the old gasket material from the cylinder head and the cylinder head cover gasket surfaces.

1. When the cylinder head surfaces are free and clean, apply beads of sealant to the cylinder head in the locations shown in the accompanying illustrations.
2. Install the new cylinder head gasket in the cover. Make sure that the gasket seats evenly.
3. Place the cylinder head cover with the gasket onto the cylinder head.
4. Install the four grommets and nuts. Uniformly tighten the nuts in several passes to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) on the 2S-ELC; 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm) on the 3S-FE and 5S-FE.

On 3S-FE engines, align the grommets as shown in the accompanying illustration to ensure proper sealing of the cylinder head cover.

1. Connect the PCV hose. Connect all removed vacuum hoses, connectors and electrical wiring. Connect the negative battery cable.
2. Start the engine and inspect for oil leaks. Repair any leaks as necessary.

2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE Engines
See Figure 6
It is recommended when replacing the valve cover gasket you replace the seal nuts also. They may be reused only if they do not seem to be damaged.

1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds from the time the negative battery was disconnected to start work.
2. Remove and label all electrical wiring, connectors and vacuum hoses necessary to gain removal clearance.
3. On the 3VZ-FE, remove the V-bank cover.
4. Remove the spark plug wires. Disconnect the PCV hose.
5. Remove the six (2VZ-FE) or eight (3VZ-FE) nuts and seal washers located on top of the cylinder head cover.
6. Remove the cylinder head cover and the cover gasket from the cylinder head. Discard the gasket and replace with a new one.

To install:

1. With a wire brush or gasket scraper, remove all the old gasket material from the cylinder head and the cylinder head cover gasket surfaces.
2. When the cylinder head surfaces are free and clean, apply beads of sealant to the cylinder head in the locations shown in the accompanying illustrations.

1. Install the new cylinder head gasket in the cover. Make sure that the gasket seats evenly.
2. Place the cylinder head cover with the gasket onto the cylinder head.
3. Install the six/eight nuts and seal washers. Uniformly tighten the nuts in several passes to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
4. Install the spark plug wires. On the 3VZ-FE, install the V-bank cover.
5. Connect the PCV hose. Attach all removed vacuum hoses, connectors and electrical wiring. Connect the negative battery cable.
6. Start the engine and inspect for oil leaks. Repair any leaks as necessary.

1MZ-FE Engine

1. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
2. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose.
3. Disconnect the throttle and accelerator cables.
4. Remove the air cleaner cap assembly.
5. Remove the V-bank cover. Use a 5mm hexagon wrench to loosen the nuts.
6. Label and remove all emission control valve hoses. Disconnect any wiring interfering with the valve cover removal.
7. Remove the air intake chamber. This will gain you access to the back valve cover.
8. Dsiconnect the engine wire from the left hand side, No. 3 timing belt cover, rear side and right hand side. Most of the wiring is secured by nuts and or bolts to the body of the vehicle.
9. Remove the ignition coils, make sure the place them in order on a table so not to mix them up.
10. Remove the 8 bolts retaining the valve covers and gasket.

To install:

1. Clean the mating area of the valve cover and cylinder heads well. If necessary, scrape any left gasket from either surface.
2. Apply seal packing to the cylinder heads and place new gaskets into position.

1. Attach the valve covers. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
2. Install the spark plugs in their proper locations, then place the ignition coils into place and secure.
3. Attach all engine wiring be sure to secure each harness properly.
4. Install the air intake chamber. Refer to Fuel System .
5. Attach all emission hoses and wiring.
6. Attach the V-bank cover.

I was watching an auto show that I regulary watch and they were rebuilding an engine and they recommended not to scrape the aluminum with a wire brush or anything too abrasive that might destroy or alter the surface of the aluminum. If anything happened to the aluminum it may effect proper/effective sealing. They suggest if to use a type of plastic scraper to remove the old gasket material (not like a spatula or anything though)

I also agree, when we took the cover off one of my friends Tercel we scraped with a plastic Bondo Applicator, worked well, didn't scrape too hard.
