my 99 camry 4 cyl is coming up on 100k and pple told me the timing belt and water pump r do around then i just want to get a rough idea on how much that will run normally? my dads know a mechanic and he gave me an estimate of 550 the most with a brand new water pump not re-made. ur input would be appreciated by me thanks
I would recommend it, on my Gen 3 I bought it used with around 120K and then the belt broke on me a few months later. The total for the belt ad waterpump ran me around $500, so i'd say that $550 isnt too bad.
Well, I usually first go to Rockauto.com and price the parts. They show a lot of brands and prices, gets me grounded. I think they show about $55 for the timing belt w/tensioner. New water pump is about $65, rebuilt is as low as $25. Should be similar if you (or your mechanic) buy locally.
Yes, I've read that you should do the waterpump and its gaskets when inside for the timing belt.
My son had the water pump done due to mechanic's recommendation to solve overheating and had the timing belt changed while in there... nearly $650 (seemed excessive to me, this job is not hard). Assume the position.
You'd probably save $500 doing it yourself. If you do, invest in three open-ended GearWrenches with angled offset --- 10MM, 12MM and 14MM. They are invaluable for this job. (at least they were on the 94 4cyl)
I just got my car back from the 200 000 km service where they also need to replace the timing belt. Funny enough, they told me that I NEED to replace the water pump also. I find nothing wrong with the water pump at all. The temperature is running constant, there's no noise coming from it, no leak... NOTHING.
Either way, when the dealership phoned me, telling me that I need the waterpump replaced, they gave me a price of around USD280 (ZAR 1980). Include that into the normal service costs, and it would've cost me around USD 780 (ZAR 5600)...
I opted NOT to replace the waterpump. I'll just keep my eyes on the temperature gauge, and see what happens.

would have been cheaper to replace the water pump at the same time.
if it would to fail, then you will have boiling water all over the new timing belt..no ideal.
also, the water pump is just next to the timing belt. another 10 min's work to get to the water pump. Saves you $$
