4th Generation Car wont shift out of park...

my 98 camry v6..wont shift out of park....ive been using the manual override to shift it out but it gets annoying when i take it to valets and carwashes....do you guys have any suggestions?

It's time to take off the shifter cover and take a look under there. There's probably something jammed in there, breadcrumbs, etc...or it could be worn out.

One time this happened on a Ford. It turned out to be something sticky that had been spilled down the shift box. ... Used WD40 or some other spray .... repetitively, and eventually it worked just fine. .... Haven't taken a Camry shifter apart, though.

my guess is its the "park" safety switch. this safety switch is located by the brake pedal. im just about positive you can see if you lay down and look up at the arm of the brake pedal. there is a small metal wand that reaches out and makes contact with the arm of the brake. this then sends a singal to the shifter to unlock "park." check to make sure this wand is still making contact with the brake pedal arm. if you need to, the wand can be bent to press harder on the switch.

i just checked and all i saw was a spring that holds it up and a solenoid looking thing....when i press the brake down it releases the button on the solenoid looking thing...maybe i have to replace it....does anyone know what its called...i looked in the shifter and there was dirt so i cleaned it. and it didnt help.....ill try to take a pic of the part after i get home from work...or maybe tommorow...thanks

nvm about the last post all i saw was the brake light sensor....im still curious of where exactly that rod is?....can someone please take a picture so i know what its supposed to look like....
