92 Camary AC retrofit adapter problem

I am having a problem with trying to charge the AC on a 92 Camry. I am using an R12 substitute and I bought the universal 134a retrofit adapters (they are required to use the substitute), when I try to screw the low side adapter on the valve the refrigerent starts to leak out. If you are fast you can get it screwed on but then the hose won't clip on because the center pin on the hose can't depress the valve pin on the adapter. The bottom line is the valve pin on the adapter is pushing the valve pin on the low side connector and it shouldn't be, and it is so tight it will start to bend and mush the valve pin on the low side valve. I did this same recharge on a Jeep and had no problem screwing the adapter on. I have called a few parts stores and they say there is not a special adapter for Toyota that they are universal. I also see other threads were it appears people had no problems with the adapters. Am I missing something? Is there a special adapter? I know I am on the low side valve because it located right by the firewall on the passenger side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are in the right spot. My dad and I just did this to mine when i went to pick it up last week in Virginia. It's a royal PITA to get to to get any type of wrench on it to tighten it down. Had to move all types of electrical connectors and such to get any space.

There is no special adapter...its the one that comes in all the kits. Just make sure you are using the longer adapter..not the shorter one...as the shorter one is for the high side, which is between the battery and the left headlight.

Good luck....i kindof bent my aluminum a/c pipe that the low side is attached to, but not enough to break it or make it leak.

Why don't you remove the valve core from the low side connector? The adapter has an o-ring seal to the OE valve so you don't really need an extra valve core. Only drawback is you'll have to release all the 134 in the system. Maybe you could get a shop to pull the 134 out and reinstall it.

Stillrunning is correct in most cases you will have to remove the valve core from the origional fitting before screwing on the retrofit adaptor. If you have mushroomed the valve core on the retrofit adaptor you will have to replace the valve core in it as it is now damaged.

Nice timing for the retrofits. I retrofit mine two weeks back ('93 Camry V6). Don't recall having any problems putting the adapter on the R12 connections, but I did have problems with the R134a adapter. It's situated in a way that made it difficult to get the low-side/sleeve of my manifold guage set onto the retrofit adapter. But the sleeve eventually snapped on, so it only took patience.

Damn, man. Over a year and a half membership and you've just now made your first post...you're the ultimate lurker, huh?
