Are you sure you need to change it. You should never have to in modern cars with modern fuel. I know that in some Toyotas use to have them inline near the drivers door. That being said, i think the Gen 3 has 2, one in the engine bay and one in the tank. To get to the one in the tank, you remove the seat cushion and there is an access hatch. If there is any junk, i'm willing to bet that this one will get clogged first.

The Fuel filter is located under the hood mounted on the driver side wheel well. It's a black cylinder inline filter. It can be removed by losening the clamp bolt and pulling out the filter. There is a bolted hose on the top as well as a screw in type hose on the bottom. You must replace the 2 copper crush washers along the top.

You must releave fuel pressure. It's best to replace when cold and you need ot have some rags hold the bottom as you unscrew it.

It should be replaced probably every 30K - 45K

The filter that they guy above is talking about is not a filter but a fuel pump screen and should only ever be cleaned if fuel pressure is very low regardless of recenlty replaced fuel filter and finding no line obstructions and leaks in the fuel system.

Hard is a relative term. Search for other posts on filter change and you will see it can be hard, mostly because of the tightness of the connection bolts. The bottom one seems to give the most trouble, I think because some people turn it the wrong way. drunken_panda has a point - do you really need to change it? I bought my camry with 138K on it and no service information. For me the labor was free and the part about $10-$15 so the knowledge it was done and would not give problems was more important. I would not worry about the one in the tank. It's just a screen that keeps rocks out - if that gets blocked you really have a problem. I don't think a qualified mechanic should charge more than an hours labor. The only way to check the condition of the filter would be to do a fuel pressure drop test across it, which is not really feasible.

use an open ended box wrench, don't try and use the ghetto side or you'll end up twisting the fuel line.

Thats what happened to me. I ended up having to order a new fuel line from the dealer. It was only 35 bucks but its a pain to change it because the line doesn't like to go in place and fit properly. I think you're supposed to take the steering rod off of sumthin but i just shoved it till it fit well enough.
