Over time that o-ring hardens and can crack allowing oil to leak out. You can clean off the engine with brake cleaner, and drive around for a week. This lets you trace the area where the leak is coming from. I would tend to go with the guy who told you it was the o-ring. The same thing happend to me. I changed out the o-ring, and the leak was gone.
