4th Generation Shifter Malfunction

Has this happened to anyone else. My 1999 (4 cyl. Le) has over 130,000 miles and has functioned fantastically. Today, after passing MD Emmission Test, as I was asked to leave the station the car started perfectly, however, the only shifter function that worked and illuminiated was in Park. The shifter will go through R, N, D, 1 & 2 and not make any other conncection nor would it indicate that it would engage any other gear. Also, the front wheels stayed locked. Unfortunately I had to have the car towed since it was undriveable.

Help!

did you get any check engine lights along with the malfunctioning shifter?

take off the center trim and take a look at the shifter assembly. to make the tranny shift, the shifter is physically connected to the transmission via a shifter cable. make sure that it is correctly connected at both ends and that it hasn't been snapped/damaged somehow

then it's probably the shifter cable or the shifter itself

otherwise, it would throw a code
