3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've been driving a 97 Civic the last few years. Good car but it's just too small and noisy on the highway.
My wife has a 94 Camry which I love, so I started looking for one for myself.
Yesterday I test drove a 94 XLE. V6, 103,000 miles. Interior is immaculate, nice gray. Exterior is very good, dark green. Some rock chips on the hood and one small dent by the back door.
Ran excellent, all electrical works.
They were asking $4695, he went down to $4200 without a warranty, $4400 with a six month warranty. I can probably get him lower if I go back ready to buy.
I love this car BUT, the inside STINKS. It honestly smells like an animal died in there. I actually looked under the seats for a dead animal.
Anybody have any experience with getting rid of very strong odors inside of a car? I was thinking some carpet fresh on all seats & carpet and then a good vacuuming.
I don't want to buy the car and not be able to get rid of the smell.
Is this through a dealer or private party? If the smell is curable then why hasn't the seller done it? You could consult one of those detail shops about how to deal with the smell. Can the seller provide service records? What kind of warranty, with who? A 94 at 103K; get ready for some oil leaks soon. Mileage seems low?? Last timing belt change? Who will do the upkeep and repairs? I think the smell gives you a better negotiating position than you think - if you can cure it.

The car is at a used car lot. I did look at the CarFax report. Looked clean. Appearr to be a noe owner vehicle. The warranty is thru an third party. One of those that gets offered if you ever buy a used car from a car lot.
The mileage is low which is why I am interested in buying it. The engine is dry, no oil leaks at this time. No records of a timing belt change which I was going to use as more bargaining leverage.
I will do most upkeep & repairs (exept for major stuff).
I would read the fine print of the warranty before signing. I've never heard good things about 3rd party, aftermarket warranties, as well as Google the company. You could also check with your state's attorney general on complaints about the warranty company if they keep such records.
Engine dry as, "has been power washed by the dealer to conceal oil leaks"? You can replace many seals with engine in car and if you are doing the work it is little cost, much labor.

as far as im concerned thoes 3rd party warranties are BS. i was offereed one on my El Camino for an extra 400 bucks. it was like the carmax warranty, 3 day return policy and almost NO drivetrane warranty. it wansnt worth the extra money, as long as u do ur homework before u buy it. plus after owning 2 camrys, i wouldnt even see the need for one, not enough fatal problems exist, and im talking 140K miles +. as far as the stink its possible that some animal died in there. i had one die in my old car.
The engine is clean and my have been powerwashed. I took it for a test drive and looked on the ground under the car where it was parked before and after the test drive. No leaks. I opened the hood after the test drive. No buning smells.
Any opinions on the reliability of a 94 V6 engine. I know the 4 cylinders are great but I'm not familiar with the V6.
The big thing right now is the smell. As I mentioned earlier, I don't want to buy the car and not be able to get rid of the smell.
juast as good and quite possibly better then the I4. peoplely keep he V6 longer it sees may also be beacuse of the content with the avalible power as oposed to the i4.
1) the car smells like shit. forget it
2) $4200-4700 buys a 94 es 300, paying that for a camry is overpay lol
plus rodents eat everything.... god knows what they chewed on.

hahaha reminds me of that once sienfeld episode where jerry gave the car away to some homeless guy cuz it smelled so bad. then the homeless guy didnt even want it. its funny also cuz your user name is hobo haahha
I will not buy that car but after driving it I am looking for a V6 XLE with a cloth interior.
My wife's 94 LE has a 4 cylinder and it's nice but I definately like the addtional power of the V6.
I found a couple in my area but they are pretty high priced. I will try to bargain but I may end up paying more than I should.
I can't drive my Civic much longer. The seats are breaking my back and the road noise at high speed is so annoying.
