3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
driving home the other night I lost o/d in my 94 camry 1mz. Wehn I was working on them I never ran into any problems like this so I cant revert back to memory. I ahve gone through the manual and think I got it figured out but wondering if anyone else has run into this problem.
Like I said I was driving home about 80mph and felt a jerk. NO lights came on there were no noises or anything of the nature. Finally figured out the jerk was the car down shifting from o/d to 3rd at 80 or so.
I ahve gone through the manual and called a guy I used to work with at Toyota and think it is the direct clutch speed sensor. I am just wondeing if anyone else has tried diagnosing one of these or had a similar situation and what you may have done to diagnose and repair. it.
I tried going to Autozone to scan for codes the only prblem is the 94 1MZ does not ahve the OBDII connector even though it is an OBDII car. SO I cant get codes out of it that way. tried jumping te1 and e1 on the DLC under the hood and got nothing.
SO like I said jsut looking to see if anyone else may have run into something similar.

i had this problem on my 95 1mz and it turned out to be the clutch speed sensor. but the shop i took it to didnt tell me how they found out it was that. but they did say they had to "tear" apart the tranny to find the problem.
yeah the guy I used to work iwth said that is the ony thing he can remember ever replacing for teh problem I am having right now. But again it has been awahile since he has had to replace one.
Not sure why your mechanic would ahve to tear the trans apart though the sensor is right on top of the trans sort behind the starter. pretty opbvious to get to anyway. I am sjut having a problem with not being able to pull codes on it to see if it could lead me in a direction instead of testing everything in teh book.
Yeha it has been a while since I was on. I was posting so much last year because I wasnt working. Now I"m working for Nissan here in Nashville and dont have nearly as much free time.

94 1mz has it. its just not in the mandated location hehe i *think* its in the fuse panel instead of under the steering wheel. been along time so i sorta forget...
ima ditto your buddy. i've not replaced many of them, but the direct clutch tells the ECU that the speed sensor is right in first and third gear if i remember right. when you loose it the shift patterns get fucked up becuase it falls backt o just guessing what gear to be in based on the TPS sensor alone.
lol hell no you dont have free time. GD nissans drop electrical sensors left and right. you're too busy!

for anything, anytime; including camry turbos Now with Turbo!
yeah I know wehre the connector is but it is not the uniform connector is it? I thought since it was not mandatory on the 94 they didnt have to use the actual OBD connector.
as for the sensor everything I can find leads me to believe that is waht it is. Like I said jsut looking for confirmation before I go throwing parts at it. I can get one from O'reilly for 80 bucks but it is goig to take about a week for it to get here. Hell I will have spent twice that much in gas the way it is sucking it down now. Drove about 60-70 miles today and used about a 1/4 of a tank I think.

I think Toys is right... check the fuse panel to the left and slightly below the steering wheel. You have to open up the little change holder thing, take it out, and there she is.
This doesnt help you too much, but the '94 1MZ does have an OBDII port which is near the fuse panel. I used that when I connected my ScanGuage up to it a while back.
update, I called O'reilly to order the sensor and they said it was special order only. the guy said he would call me back in about an hour after I ordered it to let me know when it would be there. Never heard from him so I called back. Another guy answered the phone and he said there is no release date from teh manufacturer which means he cant even order it. He suggested I go to the local Toyota delaer. Well I ahd already called them and they have one but it is almost double the cost. SO I think I am going to try the dealership I used to work at and see if I can get one at a discount of some time. It is either that or look around on line to see if I can find one for less there.
