3rd Generation 1996 Camry Issue

I have a 1996 Camry that has a ticking or clicking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. It goes up and down in frequency with the speed of the vehicle and is present all the time. Any Ideas what this could be?

Thanks

Just married?

Well, anything from a piece of some s..t on wheels to wheel bearings. Can be your brakes too. I would check the wheels for overheating first, and then would inspect what's behind them.

blown shock

try pushing the vehicle down and if it bounces more than 2-3 times, worn shocks

try checking for leaks, jack the car up, a blown shock is obvious

Working from the "simplest explanation is often the best" vantage point, I'd look for a rock in the tire, as xtreme said. One good sized rock sitting in a tire groove can make some annoying noise.

Here's some fun with Math:
The tires on your car are about 80" in circumference (assuming 205-65R15's), which is to say with every revolution of a wheel you move forward 80 inches. At 10MPH, your car is moving about 176 inches per second. So if it's something on the tire, you'll hear it click 176/80 or 2.2 times per second. Roll the window down and drive at right about 10MPH and see if this sounds right, that you're hearing the click about twice a second. You could use a stopwatch, or use the old One-Mississippi, Two-Mississippi method.

Or, you could just feel around the perimeter of your tires for a rock. But where's the fun in that?

If you DO hear it that often, it just says it's potentially related to wheel revs... it could be a warped rotor clicking on a pad... a bad spot on a bearing... who knows. Just start simple, though.

If you have drum brakes in the rear, check for rust buildup on the outer edge of the drum, mine had so much rust on it it was starting to hit the little shield that goes around the drum and that made a ticking noise, I just chisled the rust off and it was fine. Other than that, do what's been suggested, just today I had a rock in my treads that was loud as hell.

Thanks

Ya I have checked for rocks and what not and just had the hub bearings replaced thats what the shop and I thought that it might be. It's really annoying it sounds like Pat Sajak moved into my wheel well with Vanna and the friggin wheel of fortune. Thanks for the tips though I will check the brakes see if there is any lead there it is a drum brake in the rear. Really cant complain too much though the thing has 166k mi on it and this is the first real problem i have had with it.

Thanks again will let you guys know what I find.

If you have hub caps, remove it and make sure a nut didn't come loos and is rattling around between the wheel and hub cap.
