3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a '99 camry sedan with auto. and 5S-FE. Right now it has the "stock?" style in it, the red. I believe this car has an aluminum radiator. So is that why they use the red? Is this the same as the dex-cool GM uses?
Can I just us the normal green, and change it more offen, like the recommended 2 years? I would like to use the green if I can since that is what every thing else I have takes, and then I would only need to have one type on hand.
id just advise using the red toyota coolant....it does not contain ethylene glycol like the standard green coolant, and thus it wont rot the insides of your engine, as the green coolant can do....remember you drive an asian car, with a unique design and it rusn best under the conditions setup by the factory, and thus using oem toyota coolant, filters and atf fluid is advisable
make sure not to mix the types of coolant....it could harm your engine down the road.
There are different formulations of green coolant. The Toyota red is a similar formulation to some of the green coolants out there. I ran green for about 50000 miles with tap water, 20000 of that on hard tap water (not a good thing) in my 2000 Camry. I can't tell you if that affected my engine any since the car was totaled.
You could also use Zerex G-05 which is a good coolant.
Just make sure if you switch types, that you flush all the old stuff out. You don't want to mix different formulations.

I used to be real cautious with the coolant. I always used only Toyota red during my annual fall drain and fill. Then I had the water pump changed out at the Toyota dealer, and they replaced coolant with green.

I can second touringcamry's recommendation of the G-05 coolant, it states that it's compatible with Toyotas made after 1995 and is probably about 2/3 the price of the Toyota Red coolant if not less.
