Do a search on this site for "timing belt", "crankshaft", camshaft" and you will find extensive discussion on this.

use a holding chain for the crankshaft and the camshaft shouldnt be that hard to take off.or you could use and impact gun for the bolts.

3rd Generation

Your options for removing the bolts are as follows:

camshaft: impact wrench or on the camshaft itself is a place where you can put a 22 or 24 mm wrench that can be used to hold the camshaft in place while you loosen the bolt.

crankshaft: impact wrench, holding tool (see Toyota Manual), lock flexplate/flywheel in place, or the 'ol starter trick, if you want to go through all that.

As for removing the cam, remember that there are TWO camshafts (DOHC) and when putting them back in you have to line up the marks on the camshafts or else you will definately be out of time.

The crankshaft would involve removing the balance shaft assembly, main bearing caps, flywheel/flexplace and probably a few things I'm forgetting. I'm just curious as to why you'd be removing this.

Please please please, and I can't stress this enough, at least download the engine portion of the Camry Shop manual that's available through a link in the General Camry Discussion section of TN. We can only say so much to explain it, having the official guide is so much more beneficial.

Toyota uses special tools to hold the crank and cam pulleys. As other members have posted there are several ways to hold these pulleys, you can also make your own tools similar to what Toyota has.

I've just got my timing belt changed. For the crankshaft bolt to remove I've used the "starter trick". Then, you porbably need to get it back, and for this I used two wrenches against a strut to hold the pulley, this works for my particular pulley though since it had four spokes with enough space between them to put a wrench.

For the timing belt work you normally don't need to remove the camshaft pulley, but if you really want to change it or its' bearings then it should not be so hard to hold it since when you have access to the shaft you can hold it with a wrench as toyota manuals say.

For the crankshaft pulley you'll need a puller and installer (!, yes you may need an installer too) that you can rent for free in a store.

My best guess is that if Toyota SST tools were for sale you could get them from Toyota. Why don't you ask at a dealership?

In fact, I've found something like the crankshaft SST on the web for some $220, just use the Toyota part numbers for SSTs and google them. Way too expensive to use it once in 3-5 years. And note, that even when you have the bolts off, you still need a puller tool.

It turned out that the pulley on my car was NOT the one pictured in manuals and I even had to get some special extra bolts for a rental puller. Maybe Toyota dealers have many different SSTs, but I seriously doubt an average workshop has Toyota specific tools, but they have strong record of changing timing belts anyway.

the special service tool they are referring to is a spanner wrench. photo - http://www.go2marine.com/go2_structu...0/74603F-p.jpg
i dont have one of these (yet), but ive found strap wrenches are great for holding the cam sprocket in place. photo - http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/images/pr...0995_H_1_l.jpg

The SST tools are not available from Toyota dealers. They are available here: http://toyota.spx.com/ and they are well made and extremely useful but very expensive. I think I paid around $180 for the crankshaft pulley holding tool. The one for the Camry is part of a kit that services other Toyotas as well. Oh, and to use the CS pulley holding tools you also need the companion flange holding tool. As for the camshaft you just need a camshaft gear holding tool - there are good ones out there that are reasonabley priced that are not SST.
