I can smell petrol when i drive my other car

When i drive my other car, a gen3 Maxima, with the windows open i can smell petrol throughout the cabin although its mainly in the rear.

The smell is like the smell of a petrol station, not the smell of exhaust fumes.

What could be causing this? The exhaust sounds ok btw.

does the car drive fine? it sounds like a fuel leak. ull have to check the fuel rails, injectors and fuel line. chances are its near the engine so look for wetspots.

sounds like you have a fuel leak. drive the car around and park it with the car running and crawl carefully underneither. a leak can from from one of the supply lines when the car is running, could leak from a rust spot in the tank or even where the filler neck connects. driving around just before you check (as long as you check it quickly, as petrol evaporates quickly) will hopefully leave a wet spot.

Ok.

The fuel consumption seems normal.

I drove the car 40 miles yesterday, i could smell petrol anytime i opened the windows yet when i parked in the evening i looked under the car and saw no pools of anything, no dripping and i couldnt even smell the petrol smell around or under the car literally 30 seconds after parking.

You don't need much of a leak to smell gas fumes. If the leak is small you will also not see any drips as it will evaporate first. I would take the car to a shop where they can use a sniffer for hydrocarbons and trace the leak. It sounds like it's coming from under the hood and only happens when the car has fuel pressure.

You may not have a fuel leak.. it could be that you have a disconnected or cracked/torn line somewhere in your evaporative emissions control system. Your fuel tank probably has multiple breather lines coming from it, too, you'd definitely be smelling gasoline; especially when the car is running and you can't properly pressurize the tank(gasoline vapors would be continually expelled).

If you had a physical fuel leak, you'd probably see it on the ground beneath the car..
