3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Probably a corroded contact. If you're handy, you can take it apart, test it with a multimeter, and lay down some solder to bypass the rust or sand the rust off with a dremel. Or you can just buy a replacement.

doouble check it buddy ive had that fuse go but not take the radio with it b4 and check the other fuses too...take off the plastic around the dash and check the connection to the cig lightr as this can occassionally disconnect.
Someone suggested using a flathead screwdriver to take off the U-shaped surround around the stereo. That probably works, but DANG it seems like you could scrape some stuff up trying to get the screwdriver in there.
I took some light-gauge (maybe 16- or 18-gauge) wire (steel banding wire, not copper electrical stuff) and cut off about an 8-inch long piece. At the very end, I made a J-shaped hook, and on the other end about a 2-inch long L bend. Now slide the j-hook, sideways, between the plastic bezel and vinyl of the dash. Once the j-hook "lands" behind the bezel, turn the wire 90-degrees so the j-hook is looping "behind" the bezel and pull out gently. It'll tilt outward a the bottom, then you'll have to 'unhook' a little piece at the top to remove it fully.
I've had my bezel out a dozen times using this 'tool', and there isn't a scratch to be found. Once I made the tool, I kept it in my toolbox for any future needs. All that said-- for those of you who have used a flathead, do you have scrapes? Is my crafty little tool a waste of time?
But yeah, the power problem could be a connection gone bad due to heat or corrosion. If you pull the bezel off you'll see that right away.

i can see how it could worry you, but if your careful, you shouldnt have any problems...
I had a problem with dead cigarette lighter outlet on my nissan truck. I wanted to use a solar powered battery trickle charger but the lighter socket did not work. So I just bypassed the old wiring (because i am not a contortionist and i did not want to dig into that mess of spaghetti wiring under the dash). I just rewired it to a hot lead using a fuse tap. You insert the fuse tap into something in the fuse box and piggy back off the power. (I also wired in another fuse into the circuit too just to be on the safe side).
No no no, take apart the whole cigarette lighter assembly take out the thin flimsy bronze washer your lighter will work after that! You have to take off the nut and bend some tabs and what not to get to it though, i did it like a year ago.
