Yeah, looks a tad big being a double DIN. Guess I should have shown an angle pic. It doesn't protrude from the dash as much as most single DIN units with a fold down face. I have a single DIN Alpine with storage pocket underneath in my other Camry and don't find the storage pocket to be of any use, so I decided I wanted to try a double DIN in this one.
Sounds really good considering I'm still running the factory speakers. Major improvement over the factory head unit. Planning to upgrade the speakers to Polk Audio in the near future, but the head unit was the first step.
haha wow ginormous haha I personally would only get a double din if it was a dvd player but hey if it sounds better and as long as you dont mind the size who cares
Not bad man, I've been looking at that one for a while now. I still haven't decided yet though. The other option is a double DIN kenwood. Basically I'm like you, I don't use the storage pocket so I figured it'd kinda be cool to have a double DIN head unit.
However what's been keeping me from doing it is the worry that it'd get stolen. Any suggestions for an awesome single DIN head unit?
If you want a double-din unit, get one from a newer model scion, I think they're mp3 compatible and are made by pioneer. From the one's I've seen, should plug right up.

I was waiting for the Kenwood DPX502 to come out, but got tired of waiting and I looked at the Kenwood DPX302 (same chassis and controls) at Best Buy and the controls on it seemed flimsy. That was disappointing because I've always been a big fan of Kenwood. Saw a lot of good reviews on this unit on Crutchfield.com and it was a little cheaper than the Kenwood so I tought I'd try it. We'll see how it works out.
As far as security, I live in a very low crime area and my car is garaged a lot, so I'm not too worried about it. I had single din units with detachable faces in my other car, but I could count on one hand the number of times I actually took the face off in like 10 years.
As far as single DIN units, it all depends on your definition of "awesome". Crutchfield.com is a good place to start at least to narrow down what features you want and how much you want to spend.
not to go off topic but i have a question.. are you selling that lower din since you're not using it anymore?
No plans to sell it yet. Probably hang onto it for awhile in case I decided to revert to a single DIN unit.
Although, I just put a single DIN Alpine unit in my other Camry and Crutchfield sent a replacement pocket with no door on it that fit better with the new unit than the factory pocket with the door. Hmmmm.
I almost bought a double din for the car, but opted not to (hard to sell it because only people with double dins will buy it). I always use JVC.....low end sucks, huigh end....NIIIIIIIICCCEEE
Looks nice, but I wouldn’t want to lose the pocket. Here are some pics of my radio, a Sony GT410U. These were taken at night so they aren’t the best quality… it has the USB port as well as auxiliary input
The orange glow on the right is from a 2GB flash drive. You just put .mp3s or whatever on the drive from the computer and plug it in, it even picks up at the point it last stopped. It can be put on shuffle of course.
Click on the pics to bring up larger pictures.
Here it is in red (you can switch between red and green). The red looks bad though, I always leave it in green (matches well with the other lights).
And here is the radio in more light. This is from a flash so it doesn’t look as good as it would if it were sunny outside.
I bought this plus four Sony speakers from Crutchfield for $205 total.
Radio: $135 ("outlet store" (a returned item) )
Front speakers, 5 ½” Sony GT1325A, $50 (“scratch and dent”)
Rear speakers, 6 ½” Sony GT1625A, $70
$50 credit for buying a sony head unit and two pairs of speakers (not offered anymore)
A harness for the radio and speakers, as well as adapters for the speakers (so they'd fit nicely) were included. A kit was also included though I didn't need it - I would have needed it if I didn't have the pocket.
If it wasn't for that $50 credit I wouldn't have bought this model, I would have gone with an Alpine head unit. Speaking of which, if you had to choose between keeping your OEM radio with new speakers, or new radio with OEM speakers, take the new speakers. The speakers on my '95 LE sounded OK until I put in new speakers - the OEM radio suddenly sounded really good. Of course when I swapped out the head unit it sounded even better, but just change out your speakers first.
