3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok that's good enough. I just have some technical questions I want to ask about the differences and transmissions and such. If its not too much work, I might find a shop and get a quote......
Hey Milt, if you ever see this, how different is the 3MZ from the 3VZ? Pictures would sure help!
Also wondering about tranny choices, ECU's, driveshafts, what needs to be custom and such.
Is there a 5 spd auto tranny that would fit? As much as I want performance, its still a Camry and I want an auto, I can save the manual for another car.
What do I need to carry over from a 3MZ donor car? What can I keep on the 3VZ?
differences from 3VZ
its 3.3L displacement
its OBD II ( the 3VZ is OBD I)
its an MZ platform(newer than the VZ platform)
it has an electronic throttle (although im not sure if milt has eliminted this)
it has more horsepower than the 3VZ and 1MZ
it is an aluminum block ( the 3VZ is an iron block)
im sure there are more differences that milt could point out but this is the basic list
I know it would be a custom swap, but how custom. Like would I be able to reuse suspension components from the gen 3 or 4, drive shafts, etc. I'm already expecting custom mounts and stuff like that.
its not Legos .... youre switching to a different engine type/platform, so you get ALL new stuff
minus chassis parts, of course ... its like any other engine swap
most engine swaps you have to change everything out ... most people dont just swap from a 5SFE to a 1MZFE ... an all-out swap would be like the 2JZ in a Honda S2K swap
you cant really try to ghetto-rig old parts onto the new swap, you just get everything new ...

I know its not lego, but since the 1MZ fits the Gen3 Camry, and the 1MZ and 3MZ coexisted on the Gen 5, I was thinking there would be a good chance the 3MZ would fit without TOO much hassle and some parts would be swappable. It would at least be easier than shoehorning something like a Chevy small block into the Camry.
it will fit fine ... but the 3MZ is the 3rd generation MZ, therefore making it upgraded from the 1MZ
however, i dont know that it will be easier than putting in a 350 chevy
if you really want to do the swap, youre probably going to want custom mounts and the whole deal - it will be just like putting a 3SGTE in, in terms of needed parts

Yeah I plan on finding a shop to do it, but I wanna do some research first and get a general idea as to what needs to swapped, what CAN be swapped and what needs to be custom fabbed.
