3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Been really hot here the last couple of weeks. Good time to grab some fishing line and head to the garage...
Here's the car on the dealer lot. Not a great pic. Cheap camera phone. But, as you can see, the car had gold pinstriping and a dealer decal and had the gold package emblems. I always think it's wierd they put the gold emblems on the trunk lid, but leave the C A M R Y emblems in chrome. Nice. There's also a dealer insignia on the left in black tape. Anyway, I hate dealer labels, the pinstripe was all ragged and had a wax build up on the edges, and I didn't care for the gold emblems on the burgundy paint. It all had to go....
Here's after all the badging and pinstripe were removed.
Too bad about the holes in the trunk lid. If it weren't for that, I would have stopped here. Would have liked to have totally debadged, but didn't want to mess with trying to shave the C A M R Y panel and fill the holes on the trunk lid. Much easier to just add a chrome Toyota emblem. Here it is with new Toyota emblem. At least everything is matching chrome now instead of part chrome part gold.
The parts guy at the local dealership said they refer to this as the "cowboy" emblem. New emblem matches the C A M R Y letters perfectly. Angle of the pic makes the letters look darker. Anyway, I like the much cleaner look without the TOYOTA V6 XLE and the gold pinstripe.
Still trying to find a replacement "Cowboy" emblem for my grill. Dealership ordered one based on the car year, '95, but when it came it didn't match mine. Mine is noticeably smaller than the trunk lid badge and has 3 male pegs on the back like this....
The one they got in at the dealer was almost the same size as the trunk lid badge and had 3 large female pegs that looked like you'd put screws in from the back side of the grill, and the pegs didn't match my grill. Don't know if that was for a gen 3 or what. Parts guy said they didn't show any other grill emblem in their catalog for the gen 3.5. So, now I have to figure out plan B for my grill. Looked at a local junk yard, but the only ones I saw were badly pitted, etc.
looks good man, did you remove all the pin stripes around the car? because i know on my car, the pin stripe is painted on underneath
Yep. Removed pinstriping from the entire body. It was all tape. Came off pretty easy in the 95 degree heat. Didn't even need a heat gun. Once I got it started I was able to peel it off pretty easily. Then used Goof Off to clean off the adhesive, Meguiar's Scratch-X for final cleanup and then waxed it. Should have taken more pics in the process, but it was real hot the other day and I just started in. Had it all off and debadged before I thought about pics.
Niiiice... I was thinking of doing the same thing with my '92, and maybe even rearranging the "CAMRY" to "MYCAR" like some other guys on the forum did. But unfortunately, the CAMRY letters are built into the trunk panel
It looks great, good job!

Thanks. I'm really pleased with it. You can still see some ghosting if you're real close and on the right angle, but 1 or 2 steps back and you can't see a thing. I think the ghosting will disappear over time and with a couple more detailings.
I've seen some of the M Y C A R upgrades. Pretty cool. I think if I was going to go to the trouble of pulling those letters though, I'd just shave it at that point.
someone put a different center panel on your car, thats why the letters are silver and the rest of the badges are gold
you can see the aftermath of the superglue from where the Toyota badge fell off ... ive since removed the LE badge [with the same aftermath] and replaced the center panel:
i have an extra center panel thats just painted flat black ... if i dont sell it, im going to have it painted red so i will have a fully-debadged rear .... ive already removed the CAMRY letters from it and everything:

Makes sense. I hadn't thought of that. Wonder why. No indication that the car has ever been in a wreck and I can't see any indication of paint mismatch, unless maybe the whole car was repainted in OEM color. If it was it's a very good paint job, which would have cost a lot. Maybe the car's history is not as clean is everything indicated. Hmmm.
nah, ive had a bunch of center panels in and out of my garage ... the paint looks the same on almost all of them with my paint code, you can never really tell
idk why they would switch it out either, but hey - people do weird things

Hey, I'd switch out my rear panel... In my opinion, the panel that looks like the brake lights looks ugly.
