3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a tale to tell of my first street race ... It was pathetic.
One of my coworkers got his mustang running and drove it up to the shop. it's a 1994 V8 5.0 High Output. Well, i drove it around a little bit, and it's friggin' slow. Something's just not working right with the intake, so it's all choked up.
After we closed, the guy starts warming it up, saying the intake opens up when it's been running a while. So he starts revving it up, letting it idle, then eventually it grows some balls. It can actually do a burnout, and has decent throttle response once it's warmed up...
Anyways, we decide to have a little race, just because I'd been talking all kinda smack about how slow it is. I never talk about my car being fast tho (4-door 4-cyl Camry ...)
So we go out on the highway, there's no traffic behind us. We're almost side by side (he's about 1/2 car length in front of me), going 20, then I honk it off and we go.
I couldn't believe I stayed with him all through second. I shifted at 4k rpm, because I didn't really want to beat the car up. Through 3rd I catch up to him, through fourth i'm pulling him, and once I hit 5th it's all over, all the way to 80.
Yeah, it was pathetic, but kinda funny. He's gonna have a time living this down tomorrow :P
Just thought i'd share, sorry I kinda wrote a book there...

Just curious but when is the best time to up-shift on the auto 4cyl? ie. at approximately what RPM does the engine start to lose power?
I dont beleive that for a second. First off even shifting at 4k and beating a 5.0 mustang is horseshit, unless it was automatic. My co-worker has a 5.0 foxbody, manual with some mods on it and i can barely keep up with him, and thats me going balls out.
