I don't like the look of aftermarket headunits at ALL. I honestly like keeping a car like this look as stock as possible. To solve this I started looking for double din CD/cassette headunits from other camrys on ebay. My problem was most of these auctions said that their headunits would not fit XLE models. Is that because the XLE models have externally amplified headunits or something? What car could I get a good headunit out of to fit my gen 3 XLE? I would love getting a toyota/lexus headunit over some ricey silvery/blue thing from some audio shop. My personal favorite is the 7th gen celica headunits but I don't think that'd work in my car, correct?

When you remove the factory head unit on the XLE, there's a single wiring harness plugged into the back of it, rather than the normal 2 wiring harnesses on the LE, etc. That single harness sends the output of the unit to the amp that's mounted under the passenger seat. However, Toyota was nice enough to also include the normal 2 harness setup. This allows you to install an aftermarket head unit and bypass the factory amp. Here's a tutorial on it....

Using the two harness setup makes it the same as an LE (I have an LE and an XLE). So, in general I'd say if it will work in an LE, it should work in an XLE.
I just installed an aftermarket unit in my XLE, and the install was the same as on my LE using those two harnesses.

As far as the opening, double din is double din, so anything true double din should fit.
Having said all that, I don't know anything about the factory units that you're looking at. Most of those auctions will tell you that IT'S UP TO YOU to verify fitment before you buy. They may not use the same brackets that the Camry uses. Also, IMO, buying a used head unit from eBay would be risky. Most of those units proably came from salvage. You don't know what kind of abuse they may have had. They may work fine on the guy's test bench and then have a problem in a hot or cold vehicle, etc.
Also, a lot of the factory head units had security codes such that they wouldn't work if you pulled them from the original vehicle. I've never looked into how you might override that.
