4th Generation 5speed auto trans swap?

Hello everyone,
I have been digging around the forums and I was wondering if it is possible to swap the current transmission to a 5 speed automatic.

I have seen Jon's transmission swap (http://www.1jz.com/camry/guide-trans.htm)
but I want to see if its doable on a 4 cylinder automatic.

I have a 1997 Toyota Camry LE

If it is possible I will be doing this in the future (maybe 2 years from now). I am just gathering resources and doing research.

Thanks,
Noel

is it a typo you meant to say a 5-speed manual not 5-speed auto but if you meant the auto then don't bother...

Yes i do mean auto... lol

i really do not want the hassle of shifting and such so a 5 speed auto seems more of interest to me

Sounds like a horrible idea to me. You really aren't getting anything out of it. Maybe better gas mileage but it won't be worth it after all the money you spend on the swap.

Let's be real, guys.. it's a Camry. It's heavy, boring, slow and handles like ass. It's allowed to have an autotragic

I'd be keen on a 5-speed replacement for my own Camry, too.. but given how new they are, I suspect that the cost/benefit would be a little lopsided on the cost end of things. Also, since a lot of the A/T controls are ECU-related, it may not really be possible.

Hmm... opportunity cost of swapping does sort of outweigh the benefits

but i think its worth the experience unless i happen to spend so much on the car that it equals to a brand new car..

Opportunity cost = cost of forgoing the 2nd best option.
Benefit = Best option?

If I am correct, your statement gets an F-.

the benefits would be the satisfaction of having a finished the project, 5 speed automatic, and experience, but if the second best option outweighs that in terms of money then it isnt worth it..

thats what i meant to say i believe.. maybe i did get an f - =/

Only a stripped, base model gen3 coupe was 2900lbs.. Anything past that was around 3000, and the V6s are 3100-3300, depending on trim. The Gen5 picked up a lot more weight than that, and the new Gen6 is even more of a pig. The base models are 3300lb cars!

But again, 2900 lbs is heavy when you have only a cruddy 130hp 4-cyl lugging it around
