1998 camery air bag light turned on recently

Hi, Toyotaers

The air bag light on the dashboard was turned on yesterday without any precaution while I was driving. It is 98 camery LE with 99000 miles on it. It is the first time for my car and the high way i was driving on was kind of bumpy. Is it a serious problem? will it fail me on the coming state inspection? the car has been working fine except this red light on the dashboard. I plan to take it to garage, how much will it cost normally?

thanks

The airbag system is monitored by a computer, if a component has a problem the light comes on. A trouble code(s) can be downloaded from the computer to help diagnose the problem.

The problem could be many things, simple or complex. Best to get any code reads. You can do this yourself using the light as an indicator of the trouble code or the dealer has a code reader.

The red light being on means the system has failed and is not longer working.

You can take it to the dealer and have them reset it, or you can do it yourself..

This diagram is for the gen 3, but I am sure it is no different for a gen 4.

Next time, try the search button! This has been covered many times.
