3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
my 1999 1mz (145k miles) decided to give me check engine light this morning,
upon ODB II scanner looking at the code, it gives P0441, P0441 pending, no other codes
I've read check gas cap, VSV, canistor
anyone has other recommends?
i had that code..
rubber hose always came off and I paid 2xx for a charcoal canister to be replaced. tried doing it myself but after 3 hrs, I was not able to get it off without jacking all 4 wheels off the ground.
ok, i cleared the code, checked the gas cap, i don't know what to check but tightness, when i loose the gas cap, i heard hisssss sound for 2 or 3 seconds, then i tighten it back until i heard clicks.
i also open the hood and checked any loose hoses to air box, at first glance, i didn't see any, and so far i've driven 20 miles, no check engine light yet,
last tuesday, my original battery finally gave up on me after i parked the car. so i replaced with a cheap pepboy energizer for $65. i am not sure if that has anything to do with check engine light,
i used ODB II scanner and cleard the code last week, filled up gas tank, turn gas cap until it clicks a few times, drove another 200 miles, check engine light came back on this morning,
i filled up gas tank again, drive to toyota dealer, bought a gas cap for $23 after tax , put it on, drove another 6 miles, check engine still on, then when i drove home from work later today, drove about 5 to 8 miles, the check engine light disappeared from dashboard, when i got home, i check with ODB II scanner again, still read P0441, one and only one code, i erased the code, let's see if it will come back again next week.
P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
The fuel tank is sealed to prevent gasoline emissions. The charcoal canister absorbs any gas fumes and stores them. The fumes are then directed from the canister (purged) to the engine to be burned when running. The system has a pressure sensor to detect if the fuel tank and the rest of the system remains pressured. If the system depressurizes, codes are tripped indicating an air leak somewhere or one of the system components is not working.
Problem areas: Vacuum hose leaks in the fuel tank emissions control system. Check hoses to the charcoal canister and VSV systems. Canister could have leak, defective VSV for pressure sensor or EVAP, vapor pressure sensor, fuel tank overfull check valve. Also check the gas cap seal.
This code indicates the canister may not be purging correctly. Could be a leak in the canister, hoses or a problem with the valve controlling the venting of the canister.
I've never dealt with EVAP VSV and charcoal canister, but I've been getting a check engine light, and the OBDII reader I just bought reports a P0441 Code.
Are the EVAP VSV and charcoal canister located by the gas tank or are they under the hood?. Better yet, anyone have a picture with arrows and red circles??
Googling P0441 shows incorrect purge flow. If that's the case then you should check the EVAP VSV that is under the plastic cover on top of the engine. Just trace the EVAP line (one with the green test port) to the VSV.
Disconnect the vacuum hose while the engine is running. Do you hear periodic loud sucking sound from it? If not, the VSV can be carefully cleaned by prying open the metal fingers (very carefully or you buy a new one).
Excercise all precautions working with the fuel/evap system.

I have the same issue on my 99 camry. Are Purge valve and VSV value the same thing? He said it could up to $400 to fix it but wasn't sure on the price of the parts. I also have an EVAP solenoid problem which is being fixed right now and the part costs about $140. Does that sound right?

i ended up replacing the entire chacoal canister for $200 part 6 months later, (i guess that includes all the valves), did it myself, under the car, in between rear axles. almost 2 years now, and no check engine code yet.
